malg:I'm a bit surprised, and probably disappointed, that there isn't much more of a noticeable difference. I upgraded from the Sony 350 to the Pioneer BDP 51FD, and have to say that I couldn't really see much difference. However, my wife watches the Lord of the Rings stuff a lot, and she said the picture was definitely better. My big disappointment was the time the Pioneer takes to start up. The last MOT on my car was quicker! Don't know if this is just a Pioneer thing, or if I was lucky with the Sony? The

The 51 is alot slower than the 71, the 71 has a much faster processing chip.

I'm about to go out and buy one of these but can't decide whether the 760 is worth £180 more than the 360. OK, so part of the difference will be soaked up by the wireless networking (which I don't need) and the analog out (which I don't need). So, it's all down to the improvement in the PQ and SQ.

I suspect I won't be able to review these at RS. So am having real difficulty deciding, especially given the comments in this thread.

Lovely set-up, but with an HD Ready screen - even one as excellent as the Pioneer - I don't think you're going to enjoy the full potential of the pricier Sony. Again, you should hear an improvement with your system, but not necessarily the big step up that the big-brother Sony is capable of.

Your money, your choice - but I wouldn't blame you for buying the cheaper Sony and blowing the rest on some great Blu-rays to showcase the system!

Just a thought, PJ. the 760 has earned particular praise for upscaling DVDs. However, like me you have a 4280 - which probably upscales better still (to 768p.) At least, I don't use my BDP-S350 to upscale as the TV does it better. I'm not sure that the 760 isn't overkill, especially as you don't need the wireless feature.

The reason the tv is better is anything else means theres scaling being done TWICE which is very bad practice (Unless the tvs internal scaler is awful)

I have this Blu-ray player and quite impressive it is too......

I hope it is more reliable than my Denon 2910, which will not play DVDs 75% of the time.

Not very good for a £600 DVD player, hence I didnt buy a Denon Blu-ray.

I have streamed photos quite sucessfully via wifi........

Do you think that Sony will ever update the firmware to allow MP3 streaming?

Well, i've had a few moments over lunch to take a look at the settings and come up with some suggestions. Most of them, such as the image enhancer and noise reduction are kept between -1 and +1 where applicable. We've found that the smoothing setting works best on standard and that turning the noise reduction to auto can result in a slight increase in overall clarity.

Please don't forget that if you're using the picture enhancement aids on your source and also using the picture enhancing tech on your TV, then there's a lot of picture processing and number curnching being done. It could be worth turning your TVs processing off/down a couple of notches, and seeing if this makes a difference. Unfortunately there' is no perfect formula for getting the best picture because there are so many factors to take into account such as the software and the individual source and screen being used. Let us know how you get on...

PJPro:OK. Thanks for the steer. Your comments tell me that the difference in PQ aren't great.
I think I may have made a terrible mistake. Out if the box, the 360 feels very light and fragile. The loading tray is particularly feeble. The remote rams home the budget pedigree of the product. But hey. I can live with that. The real trouble starts with playback.

The picture with DVDs is noticably soft even with animated titles like Shrek. I'm sure my PS3 was much better. But the worst is to come. The judder experienced with Bluray is almost enough to make me feel nauseous. The panning shots in the opening scenes of WALLE are terrible as the background buildings stutter across the screen. I am pretty certain this wasn't the case with my PS3 but am unable to confirm this as yet as my wife is getting her hair cut.

I've been so knocked back by the poor PQ, I haven't really given the SQ much of a listen.

At the moment, it seems my as though my attempts to get my noisy PS3 out of the living room are floundering. Hmmm. I wonder if RS will let me exchange the opened 360 for a 760? Will the 760 be any better? It's bad enough spending £140 (multi-region version was all they had) for a poor performer....but it'd be even worst if I'd paid £320 (again, multi-region is the only one available).

PJPro:The very least I'm going to do is challenge their price promise (see this).hi pj , i bought a 363 last thur (same as 360) and i think the upscaling of dvds is better than my ps3 (sold) , bluray doesnt look much different , very good , i remember clare saying on a different thread that the 360 is actually a little smoother than the ps3 , so i think you may need to persevere a bit , try changing the settings maybe ?? i wonder , is your tv 24p capable ?? if not , maybe thats causing judder ??
