Sony BDP-S370 Blu-Ray Player

I have a small selection of mostly old DVD's, which I play on my old player of many years.

If I buy the Sony What Hi-Fi Best Buy, will I be able to play old DVD's as well as any new Blu-Ray discs I might buy?

The Bluray player is a loaner so has cost me nothing, but when they take it away I'll buy one in a heartbeat, there's no competition.

Yeah sorry Alan that was a bit snappy...Sony, Samsung and Panasonic are all making great tellies nowadays if you ask me (especally if you don't give a damn about 3D), but I bought the Sony because it was a bargain (450 down from 700), does everything I could possibly want, and looks fabulous to my untrained eye - I'm sure Andy Kerr would turn his nose up at it

The 370 however is just amazing for the price - you could pick it up and throw it down the garden and it would float, but it does amazing things for the money. Everybody should have one (unless you really must have wireless).

I'd concur with general acclaim for the 370. Anyone familiar with my posts will be in little doubt that I'm no fan of corporate culture, so there's certainly no Sony-bias in evidence here. Fact is, it's a great player (and more besides) for a fantastic price.

From what I've read (no experience of direct comparison) the dedicated player will load a disc much more quickly and sound and vision are better by some degree, especially the sound

Many-a-thread has been devoted to this subject. In my opinion (and I think most agree), the 370 is more assured than the PS3 when handling motion, and beats the PS3 for sound. In terms of general image quality/detail, it's a closer race, though the 370 shades it... Hope that helps?

For what it's worth, I own both, and I haven't used the PS3 as a Blu Ray player since buying the 370.

I am very tempted to buy an S370 as I read very positive comments re it.

However I also own a 'W' series Sony TV with which the new blu ray player will be partnered.

Can anyone on here categoricaly state that there (or are not) still sound drop-out issues if these 2 are paired ? If yes, then what alternative would you recommend to me - I have no surround system (planning permission not forthcoming from my wife !!) and hence the player will be directly connected to the TV via HDMI. My budget for the player is £200 tops.

I have a S350 connected to a 40W2000 and its no problem at all. I did have concerns about the TV not being 24fps compatable before I bought the BD but people here on the forum put me right and everything is fine.

I looked at the 370, 570 and 770 and came down to the 370 or the 770. I thought that I wouldn't be happy with the 570 if I spent the extra money if the 770 was just a *liitle*step more. So I compared the 370 to the 770 and asked if it was worth the extra £100.

We will all have a different answer to that one, but I bought the 770 rationalising it as a minimum 5 year spend and the extra happiness was less than £2 a month It's a real stonker of a BDP and it makes me smile.

My wife says my justifications are a little weird if I already know what I want the answer to be.

I too became the proud owner of this player at the weekend.

What a brilliant bit of kit it is too, chuffed to bits with it. What really impressed me and suprised me, was what an accomplished cd playback player it is, ok so Im putting it through a Sony da5400 es but it actually sounds better than my old Arcam DV79 ( which was a then a £ grand dvd / cd player ). I was planning to save up and buy something alot more expensive but needed a quick fix due to my budget and for £100 it was a no brainer. Not so sure Im in a rush to upgrade now, it really is that good.

The surround HD sound and picture are brilliant on Blu ray and thats through an old 720p Toshiba 32" - it really is an amazing bit of tech, buy one thats my advice.

Cheers for the reply, though youve now added another player to the mix. I hadn t really thought about the 770 but if its "only" a hundred more it may well be worth considering. Is there a noticable difference between the two players?

I'm always interested in the topic of BluRay comparisons as there are so many different views.

Interested to know when you say the 370 is better with motion than the PS3, what are you seeing on the PS3? Is it judder, are the frames not played smoothly?
