Hi,

Hope someone can help me with a technical issue.

I have this blu-ray player and have just bought an Onkyo 876, which has much better upscaling than the Sony.

Can I turn off upscaling on the player and just ask it to output at the resolution stored on the disc or do I have to go into setup - switching it to 1080p whenever I want to watch blu-rays and switching it to 576p whenever I want to watch DVDs?

Thanks,

James

Are you sure that your amp has better scaling? All you need to do is set the resolution to auto.

You're right in what you say. The amp would have a MUCH higher grade of upscaling chipset. Unfortunately though, unless there is an "on/off" option for DVD upscaling you will have to adjust it manually.

matengawhat:i would say the amp has the better upscaler since the chip set in it is prob worth more than the 350 on its own

Wouldn't be so sure myself - not sure what chipset is in the Onkyo 876, but the Sony BDP-S550 is certainly a better upscaler of DVDs than my Onkyo 905.

As always, it's worth checking and going with your own preference.

And from what I've read the S350 has the same upscaler as the S550 (which is what I have also).

It's definitely worth experimenting to see which link in the chain upscales best. In many cases, it's actually the TV! In order for the Blu-ray player to output the signal from DVDs at their native resolution, you'll have to change the preferences manually. Auto merely selects the best resolution for your panel (1080p, normally).

I have found that my Pioneer 4280 does a marginally better job than the Sony 350, so I play DVDs on my old Panasonic DVD recorder as opposed to the Blu-Ray player. You could buy a DVD player/recorder to do the same thing, I suppose. I kept mine so that I could save the odd programme long-term.

Thank you for all of your replies. I'll let you know how I get on.

It would be a pain to always have to change the resolution every time I change from Blu-ray to DVD and it seems short-sighted of Sony, in a relatively budget player, to assume that everyone will want the in-built upscaling and not to include a menu option to switch it off.

Anyway, Onkyo 876 arrives tomorrow!
