For a while I´ve been determined that my new LCD should be the SONY 40Z4500 - well, only until I read about SONYs new ECO serie to be launched in april (in Denmark where I live). New TV-sets from SONY this year are introducing Bravia Engine 3, and some other minor (?) extras like more hdmi connections, DLNA´s etc. I don´t know if the BE3 is a remarkable step forward in picture quality, but the 40 or 46 inch WE5 is certainly different in many ways.
The backlight technique is changed from usual CCFL to "Micro-tubular" HCFL. As far as I know the Hot Catode Flourescent Lamp was a technique used by PHILIPS for a short periode. SONY claims, that this kind of backlight reduces power consumption without loss of quality. (As a non-technical bonus it´s possible to get it in a white frame, possibly more appealing to women, and perfect in modern-style homes).
Does anyone in this forum have any idea of what "Micro-tubular" means? And does this mean improvements in picture or is it just another way to do things? A feature called ACE (Auto Contrast Enhancement) should further improve contrast ratio, now 100000:1 against previous models 50000 or 80000 (Z4500).
I hope that WHF plans a review of this model! Afterall it´s a bit more inventive in the field of power-reducing equipment. The idea of making an "intelligent" TV is brilliant - no persons in the room means switching off the display automatically, and on again when a person enters the room.
