For a while I´ve been determined that my new LCD should be the SONY 40Z4500 - well, only until I read about SONYs new ECO serie to be launched in april (in Denmark where I live). New TV-sets from SONY this year are introducing Bravia Engine 3, and some other minor (?) extras like more hdmi connections, DLNA´s etc. I don´t know if the BE3 is a remarkable step forward in picture quality, but the 40 or 46 inch WE5 is certainly different in many ways.

The backlight technique is changed from usual CCFL to "Micro-tubular" HCFL. As far as I know the Hot Catode Flourescent Lamp was a technique used by PHILIPS for a short periode. SONY claims, that this kind of backlight reduces power consumption without loss of quality. (As a non-technical bonus it´s possible to get it in a white frame, possibly more appealing to women, and perfect in modern-style homes).

Does anyone in this forum have any idea of what "Micro-tubular" means? And does this mean improvements in picture or is it just another way to do things? A feature called ACE (Auto Contrast Enhancement) should further improve contrast ratio, now 100000:1 against previous models 50000 or 80000 (Z4500).

I hope that WHF plans a review of this model! Afterall it´s a bit more inventive in the field of power-reducing equipment. The idea of making an "intelligent" TV is brilliant - no persons in the room means switching off the display automatically, and on again when a person enters the room.

Hi ...

I have been waiting a while for the low energy screens to hit the shops, and gleefully turned-on the WE5 40" last week.

I can say I am nothing but impressed, and that while different sized panels are often made in different factories - often resulting in different picture quality - the review by WHiFi for the 46" version seems to hold true for the 40" as well.

Am very happy, and was worth the wait.

Limited explanation in this training video...

I have been shouting for a review of this set for a while now (see other thread, i'll bump it up). Must say I am suprised What Hi Fi have not tested it yet given all its credentials (but then I guess they have tested the 46', just I dont want that one so I dont care!).

I'm picking up the 46" WE5B (Black) tomorrow from my local Sony shop including 5 year warranty and free Sony BDP-360 blue ray player....

'' if you wait much longer the tv will be obsolete"

MAXFLIINN: LOL, thats just what my Mrs keeps saying! (and your both right!)

I'll get it at the weekend. Have had John Lewis price match at £1,125 so I guess that will do.
