Hi Everybody,

I'm looking into buying a Sonos Connect but I can't seem to find many professional reviews on the internet.

I am using a Marantz PM6005 and was looking to connect the Sonos directly (No external Dac). I was wondering if anybody could answer the following questions;

1. Does anybody have a similar set up? If so, how does it sound?

2. What is the best way to connect it to my amp, ie; Analog, Coax, Optical . I have read online that the internal DAC on the Connect isn't great, how true is this?

Thanks in advance!

I bought the Connect earlier this year and have it plugged into my amp via phono... it's superb!

I'd second Mac's opinion. It's an outstanding piece of kit. Connect it via RCA or digital, as you please. Will it make much difference how you connect it? Probably not, but you can always experiment and find out for yourself.

it is a great piece of kit and in a few months you'll wonder how you ever managed before.

I tried an external dac in my previous set up; a Spitfire Dac costing £175 and after a year I sold the Dac because i couldn't tell the difference between it and the internal dac. I admit my amp and speakers were at a 'budget' level, and perhaps the seperate dac would be more noticeabe in a better system.

I think the internal dac is worth a try; if you can borrow a dac to compare then brilliant, but don't be suprised if it isn't a night/day change

ps i know it doesnt do high res audio, but i;m never going to replace my 600cds even if they were all available in 24bit. CD quality via flac or alac is fine for me.

Yep tried an irdac no difference don't worry it sounds good. And it's rock solid unlike my AirPlay. Had mine since 2006 not missed a beat.

The Connect is very long in the tooth. It is at least one generation old, maybe two depending on how you look at it and I am surprised that Sonos haven't updated it yet. List price is around £270 and given that the Play1 has all the bits that a Connect has, plus 2 speakers and a DSP engine and costs £169 makes you wonder about the relative pricing.

I have a Connect and it works just fine. The jitter performance is not good, but if you are driving a DAC that uses jitter mitigation techniques (most good DACs do) then jitter is irrelevant. There are 'mods' available to improve the Connect's jitter performance, but as before, if you are using an external DAC this doesn't make any difference.

Sonos don't gives hints about new products, so if there is a new Connect in the works, you wouldn't get to hear about it until it is launched. So if you want one, probably best to just go out and buy one.

..Is perfectly adequate. I've got to admit I noticed a clear improvement on adding the M1DAC and this is the 'front end' I use now. But the Sonos is fine and worth it for the interface and (ease of) user experience alone.

Cheers
