Sonos and HDCD

Hello,

I'm ripping my CDs to FLAC using Exact Audio Copy, and playing them via my Sonos through digital coax into my amplifier. I'm expecting the amp to get exactly the same data via this method as it does when playing a CD via my DVD player, (also connected by digital coax).

When I play a HDCD CD in my DVD player, the amp's HDCD light comes on. The same CD ripped and played via Sonos it doesn't.

I'm wondering is there some specific configuration I need in EAC, FLAC, or Sonos to make this work? As I understand it EAC should rip out the HDCD info with the other stuff as it is embedded somehow into the ordinary CD data, FLAC should not alter it, and from other posts on the internet the data should be included when Sonos outputs it.

I set up EAC and FLAC a while back for the best and most accurate results, I hope, but maybe I've missed something out?

Any help on this would be musch appreciated. I'm keen to make sure I'm getting my CDs via Sonos exactly the same as if through a CD player.

Thanks, Ian.

As far as I know Sonos does not support HDCD, and also as far as I know WMP is the only ripper that includes the HDCD encoding in WMA Lossless.

And my guess is Sonos ignores the HDCD portion.

If it's any consolation not even Linn DS supports HDCD.

Thanks for the advice.

I'm not connecting the Sonos via analogue connections, so it doesn't need to support HDCD as such, just pass on the digital data from the CD to my amp which does.

I tag the files with a replay gain after conversion, but don't apply real replay gain to the data, (as in change it). I never thought about the on the fly replay gain causing a problem for HDCD. I'll try taking off that processing and see what happens.

Thanks again
