Hello All,

I am currently renovating a bungalow and now at the stage of deciding on what equipment to use. I have re-wired the whole whilist also putting in CAT 5e, Sky (twin), coxial in every room.

I am looking to install a false chimney breast in the lounge and sinking the TV into this. I dont want a deep chimeny breast as i dont want to take to much space up, i was thinking 200mm.

My issue is where to put the AV equipment and what to use. I am looking to run Sky plus and a PS3. I would also like to have the home computer linked to the TV and Amp. I have been reading reviews but it is now starting to hurt my head.

All advice will be taken on board and listened to.

I will post some pictures if i can.

Thanks,

A lttle more specific information may provide you with some responses - the most obvious being what is your budget? and what exactly do you want? Do you want (apart from the TV) a cinema receiver, and 5.1 speaker set up, plus anything else? Are you mostly movies? Do you want a full blown speaker system or a style package that does not take over the room etc etc

BTW why do you want to build a false chimney breast? to hide the cables or for cosmetic reasons?

Couple of sheets of MDF, glue and paint and it would save you messing around with framing and plasterboard.

Just an idea that you could elaborate on.

You could also look at a floating wall type setup... Basically a sheet of MDF spaced off the wall (backlit) and every:) thing mounted onto that

Installing a false chimney is easy, but bare in mind future upgrading of cables, tv and even speakers, you may find you end up giving your self future headaches If say you HDMI cable backs up
I did what your proposing and my chimney is faced with black granite so I had to take everything into consideration before I started, including sufficient airflow around the tv and upgrading of cabling as required through lowered ceiling section (as my amp etc is at the rear the room away from the tv etc)

Many people put their TV on the chimney breast because they don't have a better option and it has become something of a classic look. However, IMO it isn't a great idea - if you place your screen too high you will end up with a sore neck. Ideally, it should be much closer to eye-level when you're sitting down.
