Ok so i am looking to get a new hi fi, looking at micro systems and mini seperates (lack of space) don't really want to go over £250 for the unit itself (excluding speakers), so £250 max budget and looking around £150-200 area. I tried the denon dm37 and volume increments annoyed me on it so looking for alternatives to that. intergrated iPod dock is not that necessary. I know alot of it is to do with the speakers you match but overall im looking for a sound that is detailed, clear, realistic and has good mid range and strong bass. The sort of sound that i can listen to for hours and not get tired of it, a pleasing sound, not too warm and dull though! My main music listening is rock music from, muse, queens of the stone age, red hot chili peppers, biffy clyro etc. I listen to many different types of music so would a like flexible system that is good in all areas (if possible) I currently have the mordaunt short 902i speakers and i may change them if necessary as didn't like the sound they gave me with the denon dm37. Was too bright, mid range wasn't good and sounded muddled with heavy and fast paced music at times. Been looking at the q acoustic 2020's speakers or roth oli 2. They have to be mountable so no curved edges and no drilling into the speaker cabinets! (I currently have bt77 brackets) Can any of you guys help?

I do doubt that you will be happy given the budget you are spending and the comments previously made. I thought this topic had been exhausted by now.

You are asking a lot given your budget, but I would suggest trying the Onkyo or a TEAC. Both brands punch above their price point in the shoebox system market.

The Roth cabinets are slightly curved so Qs look like the best option if you change your speakers. I'd go for the 2010s though to avoid boomy bass given your positioning issues.

I would try to get a second hand Onkyo CR515 I feel it gives exactly what you are after in terms of sound, I would have described it very much as you have. It won 2 whfi awards I think. I also had a listen to the denon when looking for my mini system and felt the bass was too heavy. as it would be second hand you would also have more money for speakers (although the ones it comes with are good in my opinion.
also on the second hand front you could look out for a audio analogue enigma or a linn classik music? I have not heard these but I would think they would be a step up sound wise. could be over budget though..... but you have speakers for now if needed.

TBH it sounds as if you've opened a can of worms and maybe should have stuck with the Denon a bit longer!

I agree that the Q Acoustic 2010 speakers would be your best option OR maybe some 2nd hand B&W 601 S3's. Superb speakers and will suit a mini-system down to a tee.

Also in agreement with a 2nd hand Onk C515 system or maybe the Teac option as well. Have you considered the NAD C715 at all?

I think for a noticeable jump on sound quality you need something like this - a second hand Linn Classik Music for 359 GBP

Yeah i have considered the nad c715 although i want a silver unit, and the nad only comes in black from what i've seen. onkyo looks good what its wattage per channel?

i was thinking the onko 725 as its 50w per channel and is only £179 new. maybe it will dirve my mordaunt shorts better?

Hifix are going to call me back in regards to stock of the yamaha crxd430, if that falls through richersounds have one left that i can pick up cheap.

I know it may have been bad changing the denon but the volume increments got to me aswell as system pairing, i just want an system that i will like and then go from there in regards to speakers maybe it will be better once i have the yamaha and moved the speakers, if not, q acoustics it is.

It's only for a bedroom and anything is better then my philips budget system that i had, which served me well.

I will pop into richers soon, but demoing there is annoying as its such a small store and i feel as you can't really get a real listen.

Thanks i do like the onkyo systems and if i were to go for one i would have decided between the cr515, 525 and 725. Has to be silver.

Now that i know the roth's are curved i will not look into getting them.

These are the positioning issues as the OP linked elsewhere

Thanks, i am considering going for an onkyo, how about the CR-725? its higher rated wattage per channel at 50. found it at £179.

I have not heard it personally but I vaguely remember it getting less enthusiastic reviews than the 515. to me the 515 had plenty of power so again personally I would not think in a small to medium sized room that the lower wattage would be a problem.

Hmm i've been reading very good reviews about the 725, maybe it was getting less enthuastic reviews as it was alot more expensive when it was new. People were saying it is a step up on the denon dm37, i think the 725 used to retail at around £300 when new and the majority went for the cheaper systems or just went onto seperates. what you think?

Also i can't find the 515 anywhere?

What's the difference between the 515 and 525?

I'm no expert but I bought an Onkyo 725 with a pair of MA BR1s to replace my Technics micro system and it is a huge improvement. The system gives a nice, warm sound which fills the room - especially with the super bass function on. To my ear it provides a very detailed mid-range too.

Thank you JC1982.

I am on the brink of buying this now, anything else i should consider?

I didn't audition any other systems but this was highly recommended to me by the guys at Audio-T. I have come across other forums where it has been preferred over the denon dm-37 due to extra power output and more controlled bass. For £179 I think it is a great little system, especially for a bedroom. I have mine in a dining room (c.13 feet square) with the speakers wall-mounted and it sounds warm and detailed with plenty of punch if required.

Ok so i set up the onkyo 725 today and wow! much better then thE denon dm37, it's more musical, more pleasant to listen to and slightly more warmer (treble is on -1) and the bass is much better not so overpowering but still punchy whilst the detail is still there and the mid range seems lifted and more apparent.
