Samsung UE40H5500 to play through Naim pre-amp. How do I connect the HDMI output to the phono sockets in the amp? How do I convert the digital signal from the tv into analogue?

Connect the optical (Toslink) output from the TV to a DAC. A suitable DAC could cost anything from £30 to tens of thousands of £s.

Then just run the RCA interconnects from the DAC to your pre-amp.

For a TV, the one I linked will be fine. (Although I expect - as a Naim owner - you will want something more expensive. The choice is vast.)

Thank you for your reply. On the back of the TV is a socket marked Digital Audio Out Optical. is this what you refer to as toslink? Please excuse my ignorance of IT terminology.

I'd look out for something like an ARCAM rLink second hand. They go for more than the Fiio models do new, but the rLink gives a 2V line output which is more on par with modern sources these days.

I'm not sure what the Fiio DACs are like, they may give a decent output out too. In which case go for it, but I have something very similar in price and spec for my TV and I've decided to get the rLink. I'm a bit sick of hitting 12 and 1 o'clock on the volume dial of my amp just to get a half decent output from the cheap DAC I'm using. Not fun when switching between sources!

just something to think about.
