Has anyone else noticed A horrible screeching and popping sound when starting playback of dolby digital program soundtracks? Im using a sky hd box connecting to my avr via toslink, is this just something that the box does or can i do something about it? And would i get the same problem with coaxial spdif? Thanks Nick

Would help if you mentioned what your AVR is, some seem to suffer from it, others don't. I believe Andrew has mentioned it's to do with receivers that don't mute the inputs when switching (and going from a stereo to a dolby digital soundtrack would count as switching, even on the same input).

My 10+ year old receiver doesn't have this problem with SkyHD for instance, which makes me a little nervous about replacing it to be honest.

Thats very interesting as I had that problem too. Starts off OK, then horrible metallicy screaching sound after a few seconds. Am I right in saying that Toslink is the optical output? I was using my old Acoustic Energy Aego P5 with my Sky HD, but gave up because of this and now have the HD box in a different room. I think I have a Samsung HD box.

oh I see, so if it's because the AVR (which is currently a CA 540r but soon to be replaced with a Denon 1910) doesn't mute when switching then i would have the same problem with coax wouldn't I?

yes TOSLINK is optical

to be honest it's only really a minor annoyance made slightly more annoying by the fact that my AVR's remote is a bit dodgy so I can't always mute the AVR when changing program

anyways

thanks
