i am seriously considering buying a projector and i'm toying with the idea of a 21:9 screen. could any of you guys advice me on what screen size i should be watching sitting at 13 ft away, ideally the projector will be 1080p(will this make a difference in viewing distance?) thank you.

Im not sure of the proper size distance ratio but i had a 92" 16:9 screen that i sat about 13 feet from and found it a little large, It wasnt bad but i found my self almost having to look around to follow the action if you know what i mean??? Which in turn made the rainbow effect more noticable(which may not be a problem for your self). If I was go and get me an LCD projector i would personaly get a sceen about 70/80"......

82" should be ideal but it depends if you like to sit in the front row at the cinema or not. If so 92" will be just fine.

1080p makes all the difference unless it is the really budget models in which case a better specified 720p might outperform it. A demonstration will help you decide though. As for 21:9 I would sort the projector first, the PTAE3000 is a good choice as it has an automatic zoom function that will adjust from 16:9 to 21:9 at the touch of a button.

If you were looking to opt for a 2.35:1 anamorphic lens then speaking to a specialist dealer is essential IMO.

The Panasonic PTAE3000 is the one you want or motion. Normally we turn off the motion enhancers but the one in the Panasonic really works - in a mild way. The colour is good on the Panasonic but you are not going to get a 90" version of the Pionee as that kind of performance doesnt become available until you look at the more expensive units. You will be very impressed though, projectors at this price have moved on considerably from just a copuple of years ago.

You should be looking for a subtended angle from the viewing position of around 36ø.

With a viewing distance of 13ft that would give you a screen width of 100", or 8ft 4".

thanks gary. i'm not looking to spend a fortune, i fancy something along the line of an infocus IN80. could anybody tell me what price a cinemascope screen would be to accompany the infocus projector and does the same width rule apply to 16:9 screens as they do with 21:9 screens?(as in viewing distance)

The 36ø rule is a good general guide for 2.35:1 and 1.78:1. At a pinch you could use 40ø which will give you a bigger screen size.

There are many brands of screen available to suit all budgets, but I would advise that you buy the best screen you can in proportion to your projector spend. You should really consider the combination as a single purchase and take into account factors such as ambient light levels. This will help you define your fabric requirements.

If you would like a price for a Screen Research screen, then please feel free to contact our UK distributor, Pulse Marketing (www.pulsemarketing.org) or email me on gary.mardell@screenresearch.com. But be aware, that we will not be your cheapest option.

P.S. Don't think I broke any house rules there... I hope.

Did some digging around and came up with two quick guides for image width vs viewing distance.

For 1.78:1 screens: screen width x 1.4
For 2.35:1 screens: screen width x 1.7

So the 13ft viewing distance for the 2.35:1 would give a screen width of 92".
