Silly question from a newbie!

If I go to an A/V receiver and good speakers and play cd's through it on a cd player, will the sound quality be comparable to an audio hifi separates system?

Depends on the receiver and your expectations, but pound for pound no - after all, there's a lot more channels and stuff to pay for.
