Hi folks

I purchased a LGBD390 last July from RS near to me, I brought this player for it's analogue outs to connect to my pre HDMI amp, ever since owning it I've not been happy with the HD sound. I have posted about this sound issue here before. However I returned it for testing last Monday so a week ago, they said 2-4 weeks to cover themselves but did not offer me a tempory player. Ppl on this forum have said try the CA 650BD, RS have a display model and one in their demo room so I asked if I could demo this at home for a couple of days, the said not a problem, leave either £400 cash or a card payment and they will refund it on return!! I don't have a spare £400 lying around even tho they have my £240 LG. I have given them a good ten years business from family and friends and they now know me.

Is it unfair that they won't allow me to demo the CA650 at home just for a couple of days??
Shall I settle for a rubbish replacement in the meantime?
Any views are welcome. Thanks

Hi,

Offer them the difference between your troublesome LG and the CA as a deposit. In effect they have full payment for the CA (as they have your initial £240).

Clearly state how long you'd like to keep the CA for and return as promised.

AKAIK it's common practice to 'charge' the card for a product to be subject to a home demo?

A fair compromise IMHO.

Cheers,

Cofnchtr.

I personally don't think it's unfair - just lending out equipment to yourself without any kind of payment (even if they know you well) sets a precedent. Do you not have a credit card that you can use for this? If the refund is done within a few days, assuming you have a 30 day credit as most credit cards offer, there should be no charge for it.

Hi,

Not actually sure about this but I'd think they would charge you and as the prof shows above as long as you return it within a week and you time it correctly within your card billing period, you'll get it refunded before you're actually asked to pay by the card company. Best time to add any new purchases is just after you receive your monthly bill.

If you really want to demo the CA and they aren't happy to accept the difference between the players, you could still pay the £400 and providing you time the purchase as detailed above, you should not be asked to pay anything by the card issuer. In effect it won't have cost you anything for a home trial.

If you were selling something and the prospective buyer wanted to take the item to their house to try it, you would ask for some sort of security? That's all the shop is doing.

Cheers,

Cofnchtr.

I don't think it is unfair - different shops have different levels of service so you can't expect them all to offer a loan service with some form of commitment. I would suspect John Lewis or Comet would follow in exactly the same way. A smaller specialist shop may be more flexible but I know of plenty who would follow suit with RS.

Thanks for all your replies.
Point taken and tbh I think they are covering themselves just as I would if the product was mine.

Thanks again.
