I got given some of this for free...

http://www.richersounds.com/product/speaker-cables/cambridge-audio/ultra-micro/audi-ultramicro-200m

What do you think? Reviews are scant (apart from on RS). It is to go with a Marantz and Dali Zensor 5.

Is it worth biting the bullet and getting some Van Damme blue or will I be burning money for nothing...?

Oh, an apologies for starting another cable thread which I am sure is completely subjective....I either need some reassurance or swaying!

Thanks

It does look a bit on the thin side. How long is your run?

Van Damme Blue or OFC is decent value cable and not expensive, I would be inclined to buy some.

Lol....

Try them first. If they sound any different to the cables you already own then decode if you want to upgrade or not.

If you have tried them then please expand on your opening post. For example how do they sound compared to your existing cable.

It's all food fun.

How much will it cost you to change to the Van Damme stuff? If it's pocket money and you want to mess about go ahead! It won't do any harm, but the cable you have for free is absolutely fine.

Sorry if first post was a bit vague.

Haven't tried the ultra micro and haven't got anything existing to try (completely new set up). Trying to decide if to change it. How am I to know if upgrading well improve sound? Catch 22!

How much is it going to cost to buy new stuff? If it's not much and you want to experiment then do so. The stuff you have is perfectly suitable for the job. I wouldn't expect any significant changes myself, but sometimes it's fun to mess about.

Silver plated copper in a polyethylene sleeve will give good results.

2.5mm cross section should do nicely.

It just feels very hefty, well made and I see no possibility ever breaking one. I've used Mogami speaker wire and made interconnects from shielded microphone wire. Quality stuff, but pricey.

Anyone got any idea what the spec of this cable I have is? Can't find it on Cambridge's site....

I had a brief look and couldn't find anything. At the very least, you would expect a cable supplier to specifiy the cross sectional area of the conductors, number of strands per conductor and strand diameter. Resistance per M would be nice as would inductance and inter-conductor capacitiance per M. Any cable supplier to industry would have this basic data as part of a datasheet.

The fact that hifi cable suppliers don't provide this information would lead one to believe that they are trying to hide something. It could be that they are concealing their 'secret sauce' for commercial reasons, or alternatively (and much more likely) concealing the secret that there is no 'secret sauce'.
