Onkyo 606 amp kef 1005.2 .Set system up useing auto speaker set up.,when watching movies if there is a long passage of speach in the movie the sub tends to go into standby until a loud noise like thunder comes along and the sub kicks back in is this normal as i feel it takes away from the feel or weight of the voice ,my cheep all in one did not do this, there is an LFE setting on the amp which you have to set up manualy ,ive set this to 120 hz other than this im lost . Help

I suspect you've got the gain on your sub set too high. If the gain is set too high the amp sets the output lower which will fool the sub into thinking the amp has switched off in quiet passages of the movie. Set it to half and run setup again. this should solve the problem.

I had this and couldn't mess with the settings too much as my sub also serves my Hi-Fi. Just leave the sub on 'On'.

Dont have a gain control on my sub, only have 3 controls,1.frequency control 2.volume control 3phase control. In the sub manual it tells you to turn up the volume and frequency control full and run speaker set up which ive done can adjusting any of these work.

Yup, adjust the volume to half and try that. Gain is basically another word for volume.

Good luck
Paulus

Thanks will give it a go, ill let you know if it works.

Hi

I have the same amp as you but paired with some Kef 2005.3's.

Check the speaker settings on your amp and look for the speaker trim levels set by your auto set-up.

My guess is that your auto-set up has set the sub woofer to a large negative number i.e. -12db.

If you want to be scientific about setting your system up, drop the gain level (on the back of your sub) and re-run the auto set-up and re-check the sub woofer trim level. It should have increased to a less negative number. Its never good to have the trim level near the extremes of the allowed range as it removes a level of control from the amp. Plus if you have a large negative number, it would explain why your sub is switching to stand by during quiet periods in a sound track.

Plus or minus 3db would be a good level to aim for if you like to tinker but just stay away from the extremes.

Good luck...Lee

Turned gain down to half ran auto set up,do i leave the gain at that level all the time?(sorry im new to this)ive also cheacked speaker config and the sub is still set to minus 15 sats are set to -9 to - 11 do i have to manualy set sub and sats?

Thanks...Nsider

Yes you can access them manually in the menu. I had to do the same after the audessey setup. I set my sub to 0 and my front and center to -2.5 and rears to -5 but it may be different for you as I have bigger speakers than sats.

Off now to give it another go , and to think auto set up made things simple, must let what hi fi sound and vision know.Keep you posted

Thanks...Nisder

Hi Again,

Audyssey initially produced some strange results for me, but i did some research and finally managed to get a sound i'm very happy with - remember its your system and you have to be happy with the sound.

Some tips i picked up to get Audyssey working for me:

- First make sure the calibration microphone is set up and positioned correctly. It should be at ear height when seated and MUST be pointed towards the ceilling. If you have high backed seats that could interfere with the sound path to the microphone, then raise the microphone above the seat back. Ideally the microphone should be positioned on a camera tripod or similar stand. The room should be as quiet as possible during calibration. Use three calibration positions as directed in the manual, not three measurements at one position.

- Turn up the crossover on the back of your subwoofer to the maximum and set the gain (also on the back of the subwoofer) to around 50%. Run the auto setup procedure and examine the results. If the sub trim levels in your amp are towards the extremes of the range, increase or reduce the gain (on the back of the sub) accordignly. For example - since your sub woofer trim is reported at minus 15db, it means the calibration has detected your sub as being too loud and is trying to reduce it. Hence i would decrease the gain (on the back of your sub) further and repeat the auto set-up until you get a trim value away from the extreme end of the range (close to zero would be ideal). The problem with a trim level at -15db is that the amp cannot go any further so for all you know, a trim of -20db could be required but thats outside the adjustable range of the amp.

- Once you get the sub trim at a reasonable level, concentrate on your other speakers. Next check the distance measurements recorded for your satelite speakers. This is easy to check with a tape measure - fine tune accordingly. The results are usually accurate but if they are a mile out, it signifies something is going wrong with your calibtation. Dont pay too much attention to the distance measurent reported for the sub, as Audyssey attempts to compensate for any delays originating from the LPF by changing the distance.

- Next check frequency cut off values reported by your amp. As a starting point check these against the specifications given for your particular speakers. Also bear in mind that the positioning of your sat speakers will have an effect on how much of the low frequency range Audyssey thinks they can handle. For example a corner position in your room is likely to generate more of a bass response over a speaker on a stand away from any walls. As a general rule, its ok to increase the crossovers but not to decrease them.

Next sit back, put on your favourite blu ray and enjoy the fruits of your hard work.

Lee.

Thanks again for your help ,ill give auto set up one more try,i did set the gain to half but sub was still at -15 and the front sats were set to full, which i know was wrong ,distance was pretty ok, i did a manual set up and iam just fine tuning ,ill take note of my settings and ill auto set up ajusting the gain even lower and see what happens .I think iam getting the hang of things now all credit to the feed back im getting,so keep up the good work ,will let you know how things go thanks again
