Where do you guys sell your old gear?

I have some cherished, boxed, mint and fully working old hifi in the loft.

Will they go just as well on eBay/Gumtree or is there a better dedicated site?

Rega Planet CD player original clamshell type.

You have to do a number of posts before you can sell or buy on there or e bay, I am about to clear out a lot of my excess amps, speakers, turntables as well.... there is only so much you can properly use and I am still going to probably keep too much back as well.

Dunno but life seems to be full of chancers who expect to buy something for nothing then amazingly they expect it to be worth a bomb when they sell. Got my amp on you know where for £50 start, before it attracted any bids (I do now have the one solitary bid, so bye bye PM66KI one way or another) I had one guy cheekily offer me £50 to end the auction. I thought crise you know how to twist a guy's arm don't you. Obviously I 'politely declined' bringing his attention to the fact I'd rather take the chance of it attracting more than one bid.

I've got a few things i've been meaning to sell for a while (amp, cd player, speakers) and also not sure where best to sell. My issue with ebay is the large commision they take, plus extra paypal fees on top again.

The 10% commission seems high but I've found that over the years you get higher prices on Ebay rather than using the various hifi forums, so you end up with roughly the same anyway. AVForums is pretty good but you just have to be prepared for some ridiculous low ball offers more often than not.

For relatively low value items ( eg less than £100/£150) recently I've used Gumtree. Now I know it gets a bad press with regards stolen goods, fake headphones etc. but not everything on there is dodgy, and if you're buying local then you can check stuff out before laying out any cash. If you're not happy paying a commission to Ebay for them providing you the biggest marketplace in the world then try Gumtree, it's free.

Ebay is generally good in my experience, I sold some vintage Quad stuff on there, and some LS3/5A (is it just me or are they waaaaay over-rated?), and my Arcam CD72 and got good prices... I also picked up some awesome stuff for my daughters first hifi last year, my Cyrus CD6 for just over a ton, and yesterday bagged some JPW mini monitor for my sons first hifi for 99p....

So, I guess the lesson is that ebay can be good. the problem is sometimes it's VERY good for the buyer, and not so much for the seller!

DIB, I don't think anyone really objects to ebay charging commission - just that the amount is way too high, and that there are then Paypal fees on top... It ends up eating a big chunk....

As above, I 've made quite a few quid buying older style speakers (I can't find any that I like the sound of & Mrs Gaz likes the look of) on Ebay, then selling them on Gumtree.

For example

Mordaunt Short MS35ti- bought for £15, sold for £30

Mordaunt Short MS25 bought for 99p, sold for £25

Kef Coda 3 bought for £10, sold for £35

JPW ML810 bought £3.49 sold for £40

So I wouldn't try to sell anything on Ebay without a high starting bid or a reserve or it could go for peanuts
