Saw that Sony VLP1000 near wall PJ today

Flipping huge! At least four feet long and a foot high and deep! It's like the bottom half of an old fashioned "big screen" projector TV. Which is probably what its based on....

Not impressed.

Do you mean Sony LSPX-W1S 4K Ultra Short Throw Projector? There's no Sony VLP1000.
