Yesterday I was given a Sansui SR B200 tt. Once I'd cleaned up the interconnect, and generally cleaned and dusted it, I hooked it up to my PM4200 and was pleasently suprised at how good it sounded. I cant see much about it on the 'net, but there is a fair bit about the 222 model.

My first purchase today has been the Anti-stat cleaning kit as my old vinyl is a bit grubby in places, but I'm wondering if I should consider replacing the stylus? I don't want to spend much on this as I dont think its worth that much, so maybe I should just enjoy it for what it is. What do you think?

Sansui's, good turntables, have you looked on the vinyl engine site, great for everything vinyl. For around £40.00 only 1 cartridge, AT 95E, may stir up a hornets nest here but much better than the 2m red's and blue's and quite a few more.

Not here; AT make some great cartridges. I heard some folk have used a 95E on an LP12 and enjoyed the end result!

What cartridge does it have? Is there anything wrong with it?

Could be it's a better cartridge than the one being somewhat hastily recommended, and replacement styli are readily available for most cartridges.

Also you need to consider whether the cartridge is a good match for the arm in terms of compliance. As has been suggested, check vinylengine for info.

Your quite right Grottyash about the stylus replacement, could be he has a decent cartridge on it already but i dont believe it's a hasty recommendation, as for the price you pay for a replacement stylus a new cartridge would not break the bank and i cant think of a cartridge that betters it under £100.00. The AT 440MA is a very good cartridge but is rather pricey now as is the Goldring 1000 series. The matching of the AT should not be a problem, as mentioned earlier it can work with arms on tables like the LP 12 which normally come with medium to high mass tonearms or the likes of the duals with a lighter mass tonearm.

Definitely jumping the gun because a new cartridge may not even be needed - the OP mentions the turntable sounds good. Also, if he has something like a v15 on the deck then a new stylus would definitely be the way to go! Lp gear in the states can supply reasonably priced stylus replacements, as can needledoctor and a few others.

By the way check the williamthakker website. The AT95E sets you back a paltry 20,90? and the AT440mla 129,95?. I've dealt with them before, and they were both quick and reliable.

Sorry if the above came across as being a bit blunt. It's what living in Finland does to you!

Thanks all. The current stylus looks to be the original Sansui one. My first purchase on Friday was the Anti-stat cleaner. Then I think the AT95e for about £16 seems to be a good upgrade! Does it just slot in or is it more fiddly than that?

The a replacement stylus is available from LP gear in the US, but costs more than the AT95E to ship here!

Yes, it is a lot more fiddly. You have to set cartridge alignment and tracking force. Vinylengine can help you with an alignment protractor and instructions.

Dunno where I got £16 from ( the replacement Sansui's are £16!) The AT's are about £30-35. Is that about right?

GrottyAsh,

I see that you mention william thakker has AT95e's on another post - I can only find him on the Austrailian 'bay. Does he have a european site?
