I am really fed up with the situation I have ended up with trying to get this tv. I originally bought this from empire direct 2 days before they went bump and I am now trying to get me money back from the credit company (that is another story). I decided to purchase it from crampton and moore who got rave reviews from various forums so having had my fingers burnt once before took the plunge again. I actually went and got it from their warehouse in Sheffield. At first I was blown away by the pictures this screen was giving out. I was using HDMI and upscalling SD using a sony amp with farouda upscaler. The rgb scart is okay but not as good a hdmi input. The problem started 2 weeks ago. It started to shimmer down the middle of the screen and went dull at the top of the screen. cramton and moore agreed to swap the tv out as it was within there permitted timetable of events. The problem was that they did not have any more and were not likely to get any from samsung. They suggested that I try samsung direct which I did and they said they would send out an engineer as there policy was to repair rather than replace. The sub contracted engineer arrived and the problem seemed to have disappeared. I told the engineer what the problem was and he said without any investigation that it needed a new motherboard. It was pretty obvious he didn't know what the problem was as he said this was new model he had not come across. He didn't even know what LED backlighting was. This did not instill any confidence in this companies approach. I think the problem is it has a patch of dullness which is uniform and the bottom patch flickers which suggests the LED's are at fault as they keep switching on and off. The tv is fine when first turned on but the problem starts after it has been on for several hours.

I know this has turned into a moan but when the telly is working the pictures are fantastic with really deep blacks and I mean pitch black. Have started to watch some of my DVD's upscaled and the quality is brilliant and has given the old DVD's a new lease of life.

If you want to pass on on any advice that is fine and if you don't that is fine too.

I have taken pictures of the fault since the engineer has been but this forum doesn't allow uploading of pics.

It does they just need to be below a certain size (which I can't remember off the top of my head...).ÿ

Yep, that looks like dodgy LEDs to me - a real shame, as it's otherwise a great set. Sadly, statistically there'll always be duff units in any mass-produced CE product, and you've been unlucky enough to get one.

I'll pass this onto Samsung, if you like?

Yes and Yes again.

It is a fantastic set I can't believe how black it goes. Like I said in my earlier posts have been watching some films on sky TV through the sony amp on the upscaler and via hdmi and the blacks are really black so much so in a darkened room it is really creepy. My last tv was a Toshiba back projector and it was always different shades of grey. I like the fact that it works really well at streaming videos to it from my pc using twonky media. The Samsung software is really poor. The pictures from the usb port are excellent. In fact it does everything I want and more.

I was given Samsungs number and they said that they would send an engineer out. As I said earlier they didn't have a clue what I was going on about and suggested it was the motherboard. I would not like for them to do any repairs.

The fault occoured within 3 weeks of purchase and Crampton & Moore agreed to swop it out only they did not have any more and didn't know when they were likely to get some.

I am sure Samsung have some in the country if only they could let Crampton & Moore have one then the matter could then be easily resolved.

Just to let you know

I have been in contact with Crampton & Moore and they too will be trying the Samsung rep tomorrow. They have been good and are willing to give me a refund or a replacement model from there in store range depending on the out come.

Here's another one for you,

I have just been told by crampton and moore that the series 9 has been discontinued (less than 12 months old????). Therefore they will replace the series 9 with the newer series 7000 which has not yet arrived in this country. Having looked around the internet it seems it has 3 models called the Luxia 8000, 7000 and 6000. All of them have LED backlighting, but the 8000 and 7000 series have the yahoo@tv widget as standard. Now then what to do. Do I get me money back and go for a Pioneer Kuro 50" (which goes out of production next year) or stick with this newer model which c&m will keep at the same price as the previous series 9 model. Ihave not seen it reviewed as yet just the specs and what it is capable of. I have been to see the pioneer and in comparision it does do bettter with SD pictures than the Samsung but on HD stuff I cannot tell the difference. As I said in my earlier posts black is black on the samsung but just unsure about reliability.
