HI all,

I am looking to take the big step into HD tv,my main source will be SKY HD and the occassional blue ray dvd.

After reading the What Hi Fi awards last month,i decided like a lot of people to go for the Sony KDL40W4500,then the big bombshell came with the clouding and backlight beeding problems on this set.

After reading another popular forum it appears hit and miss if i was to get a problem free set, with the later batches still having problems and some buyers getting a good set with a 08/10 made in spain.

The response from Sony on this issue made my mind up to have a look at other manufacturers, as their washing of hands to any fault on this set was the killer blow.

I don't need the hassle of arguing and sending back faulty sets to retailers with Sony not backing us up on this.

I noticed the Samsung LE40A786 has LED backlighting which gives this set a contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1 which they claim improves blacks and colours dramatically, with hopefully no clouding and backlight bleed

The other forum has given this set a good write up and i was wondering has anybody got this set with a opinions on it

Clare, with all this Sony grief going around could you have review on this set as an alternative for your readers and online viewers as any other choices would be helpfull, have you managed to see this set against the Sony for a comparison in performance.

I have seen the Panasonic plasmas(pz80),for you plasma fans,so i was just looking for comparisons.

The Samsung is £110 dearer than the Sony & £200 more than the Panasonic.

Many thanks as any help would be appreciated.

The Samsung is very good, imo better than the Sony you mention. The picture looks more natural and blacks are better. Still, I'd go for a panasonic plasma as its another step up if a natural picture rather than the brightness of lcd is important.

Thanks drummerman for your reply,i was under the impression that LCD has now upped it's game and is now on a par with plasma as far as blacks, colour & motion(this set has 100hz) but with a sharper picture.

Am i wrong?,probably starting the LCDvPLASMA debate again, sorry.

"is now on a par with plasma" ????

If you think LCD's are only "on par" with plasmas, why think about buying one?

They cost more and suffer from all of the problems you mentioned. Buy a plasma if you're after a great TV with a fantastic picture.
