I've got a 786 coming Friday - price-matched by John Lewis for £849.
Better TV, with 200000:1 contrast ratio. Only a 40", but, do some more research and you may find JL can price-match, and get free delivery and free 5 year warranty free.
Let me find who they price-matched it with.
Back soon.

sure rock , i like your telly too , although for me the bigger the better , so my grand will only get me a 40 786, my room is large , but if it suits your set up it does appear a great tv , price ....

Samsung is known for playing model number bingo, with different designations and suffixes for models sold through some of the larger chains.

Clare's your expert on this...

No need to shout....

Anyhow, here's how Samsung's TV model numbering works (NB, this is for current range - no doubt forthcoming ranges will be reassigned Klingon numerics or somesuch).

There's a series number, designed to denote the TV's place in the range, which runs from 4 up to 9. Examples from Samsung website here.

Confusingly for you/us, that series number isn't at the beginning, but in the middle of the model number - in this case the first '6' in that PS50A656 model number.

Several ranges include both LCD and plasma models. These are denoted by LE and PS prefixes respectively - so, going back to your 'mystery' TV, we now know it's a 6-series plasma set.

Next up is the model size - so, the PS50A656 is a 50in 6-series plasma.

Lord knows what the "A" stands for - possibly the first year of this new car-like numbering system (Samsung compares it to the BMW range)?

And it gets more confusing...

The last two digits are typically market or retailer-specific designations. So, you may find a '56' model in, say, Currys, and an '86' model in John Lewis.

There's more on your 'mystery' set on the Samsung website here. Sadly we haven't reviewed it yet (the plasmas did come out later than the LCDs, so there's still time...)

Just to add further confusion... The 786 model i have purchased has a contrast ratio of 2000000:1, whereas the 756 has a contrast ratio of 70000:1 making them two different sets altogether? Right?
Or have i missed something?

thanks for making things a little clearer , i knew the ps50a756 was samsungs top plasma , and figured the 656 was 2nd string , but it just seemed strange that there are no uk based reviews online , yourselves included , the set was released last june , i did find an american review , vs panasonic plasma , which samsung won , ive been looking 6 months for a tv ,hopefully a few more weeks and a review will pop up somewhere , it does look good , and s and r electrics in belfast has them for £1000 ... tempting...

Yeah, the 786 has LED backlighting I think. It's one of the few times I've seen the middle number make a real difference.
