hi all,

Was just wondering whether a DAC will convert surround sound formats on bluray to 2 channel? I have a bluray movie here that only has 5.1 channel audio, no 2 channel at all. My bluray player is currently connected to my tv through HDMI and analogue audio into my amp. The tv plays the audio fine most likely because of it being dolby virtual sound, however turn the amp on and it misses parts of the audio like voices and other things.

thanks in advance 🙂

no a DAC won't do that, it won't be able to handle a multi-channel signal.

As to the rest of it, what amp, speaker package and BDP is it and how have you got them connected, because it sounds very much like you've done it wrong?

At a guess I'd say you've connected the front left and right channel outputs from the BDP to the amp but not the centre and surrounds, which would explain why you've not getting the "voices".

The reason the TV works is because it's telling the BDP via the HDMI connection that it can only handle stereo audio, so the BDP is down-mixing the audio to stereo.

its a Panasonic DMP-BD30 i went through and set the player to stereo, i think its the fact that the bluray only has 5.1 soundtracks on it for various languages.

thanks.

No, it isn't. What is the amp and how have you got the BDP connected to it and the TV?

also as above make sure you are connected to the 2Ch audio outs.

thanks nads and the lhc.

lol feeling pretty silly right now my connections were right but i didnt have it set to 2 channel, when i did it last and thought it was right i changed the HDMI audio settings to pcm from bitstream.

Yeah at the moment. I have a home theatre reciever aswell pioneer vsx lx50 just dont have the room to have both systems running and would need another set of speakers. since i've been listening to a lot of music lately i'm using the old 2 channel integrated technics amp surprisingly it has a much better sound especially for music and its about 25 years old.
