It had to happen, but my Musical Fidelity X-CanV8P has packed in, after developing a crackling noise that makes listening painful. It is over 20 years old, and sadly, MF no longer provide the repair service, where they would take in older components and update them. It was a gift from Antony Michaelson, the owner of MF, after I found out that MF products, being made in Taiwan, did not always have the correct components inside them. That was after getting the X-CanV2 I had repaired. It has been recalled into service, having spent the last decade or so in the bottom of a wardrobe. For all that, it sounds great. The X-CanV8P cannot be fixed in the same way, as MF took to gluing components in. It would need an entire new inside.

I am genuinely upset, it has given me so much pleasure over the years. It is like when the cat died.

My condolences.

A somewhat leftfield suggestion, but are you sure it's actually dead?

Have you tried wiggling the speaker jack in the speaker jack hole. Does this cause normal then distorting sound dependent upon the connection? These eventually wear out and a poor connection is made. This happened on my MF X-can V2 and I bought a new headphones jack socket to replace the old one. If you do some googling you can find the correct model socket (NB: mine needed two unused pins snicking off). This is an easy job with 15mins free and a soldering iron - and if I can do it, so can anyone.

The other thing that may be wrong is if you've had it a long time and used it a lot the valve may need replacing - have you ruled this out?

Either repair option is easy and cheap. Hope that helps.

Good one 👍
Let's hope the socket is all his one needs.

Kick the can, so sorry.
On the bright side, you are free to choose another and may that bring you endless joy.
