Some help here people if you please. After months of reading on here finally decided on px80 sets with most sd being viewed. Richer sounds always gets a gd mention so went to a store today but was dissapointed.

They were in fact out of stock of both 37 and 42 but my fault for not ringing. Anyway, said couldn't decide on either 37 or 42 as don't want all the blurring etc you get if you sit to close (am 2.9m which should I think be fine for sd on the 42, anyone got one and watch from that distance or closer?). More to the point, its taken months for me to become decisive and the sales guy then advised against a plasma on 37 as pointless and stuck to his guns even when I said its just re-won the 37 category. He advised full hd, maybe a samsung, and almost discarded the plasmas. I was less than impressed and got impression he wanted to simply sell a more expensive tv regaredless of what I wanted.

So once and for all to save me from ill sales person advice, is the px80 the best for sd except for the out of price range kuro's, and as they are now equally priced, is the 42 appropriate for 2.9m veiwing distance with sd sky, and is the sd picture as gd on the 42 as it is on the 37 from that range?

I've seen SD and HD on both the 37 and the 42 and I think both look worse on the 42 from a viewing distance of 7-8ft. If you're moving up to a 40 or 42" inch TV then I would consider other options than the px80, I'm getting the 37" px80 as its amazing for the money but I could see better TV's out there which I was just unwilling to pay the extra for. Even with the 42px80 at £500 I would pay the extra for the sony w4500 over it as I found the picture noticeably not as good.. the difference was much less noticeable for me on the 37". Hope this helps. Best thing you can do is view for yourself, your eyes won't lie to you.

I can spend up to about 800 notes but their seems to be alot of probs with backilghts in the screen corners of lzd85 and 800 so ruled them out. Sd also seems to be worse on full hd versus hd, and worse with bigger screens hence my dilemma. Thanks for your opinions, anyone else got a viewpoint?

Out of interest what were the better 37 screens for sd you saw?

Interestingly I also tried to buy the 37px80 from Richer Sounds over the summer....it was always out of stock and they wanted me to buy a Samsung LCD...I resisted and got JL to price match from SoundandVision. In the end I have been extremely satisfied with SD and HD from this TV at everything over 1.2 m (closer and you can see it isnt full HD, but I would never sit this close). It is an excellent picture ...End of.
As for Richer Sounds I think they are pushing their current stock so take their advice for what it is worth.

I also have my 37 inch in a temporary location and can watch it from 3 m. Personally I think it is too small for sitting more than 2m away. So I think go for a 46pz80 which I have seen for about 850, minimally the 42 but not the 37 at 2.9, not because of the resolution but the screen size.

I have the 42 px 80 and sit mainly 9-12 ft and have a very good picture, SD and HD look very good although on some channels it can look very slightly blocky, i did look at the Sonys but to me Plasma looked a far better picture than the Sony, it didn't even look close. People see what they want to see, they think if they spend more they get better, not always the case. The PX models from Panasonic are fantastic but i personally thought for SD viewing the X were better than the Z models.

was it the weak channels like dave that were blocky and is it annoyingly blocky or bairly noticable. What sd source do you use?

It was barely noticeable and yes it was on some of the freeview channels that are quite weak, overall a fantastic TV. The source is Sky although i have noticed that the picture straight from the aerial is as good, i am tempted to change the aerial to a digital one and i reckon it will improve the freeview picture so is better than sky.

Cant comment on Richer Sounds directly, but remember salesmen are there to sell. If they are given a higher commision for selling a particular "in stock" (bought too many!!!) item then this is obviously what will be pushed. They are doing their job.

Impartial advice is very difficult to find in any shops with various suppliers working with various retailers and different incentives given to sell their products.

Forums such as this one are generally a good place to get impartial advice as people are not trying to sell (well hopefully not).

If you have seen the set and like the picture stick to your guns and get what set you want, not the set they want you to have.

BTW I have the Panasonic PZ85B, really impressed with the PQ. Looked at other makes and was not "blown over" by the PQ.

I will be 3m and 3.3 metres depending on seat, you think will still view well on sd in your experience. Do a quick experiment for me lol!

3m - 3.3m is about 10-11ft ... I would imagine you would be fine for SD.

I sit a similar distance away from a 2 year old 46 sony LCD and it looks great on SD so I would imagine that a 42 plasma would look even better.
