Replacing my floorstanding speakers with bookshelf speakers..

Hey. New to this site, hope you can help me.

I have recently moved into a new house, and space issues don't allow me to have my floorstanding speakers (Eltax Symphony 8.2 200Watt). Previously I've had these connected to an amp and CD player, DVD player, and squeezebox - also attached to the amp is a fairly (probably over the top) subwoofer that I've inherited from a friend.

So - my question is. If I spend enough on some good quality bookshelf speakers, will they ever sound as good / powerful etc as the floorstanding ones I had before? I don't want music to sound less good, or films less intense!

Any advice appreciated...

I have an Arcam A65+. Budget can be anywhere between £100 - £450.

Are stands absolutely necessary then? I was hoping to actually put them on some in built shelves. With the stands I'm not sure i'm going to be saving any room (unless the speakers themselves are small).

Right, I used to have and loved the A65 Plus.

Dedicated stands are essential if you want to maximise speaker's detail, soundstage, imaging and overall tonal qualities.

Firstly, Monitor Audio is the best synergy match for Arcam. I would start off looking at MA RX1s. I think they retail around £300 mark and add around £100 for decent stands. And while I think of it a few meters of good quality speaker cable, like Chord SilverScreen is ideal.

Alternatives for speakers would be B&W 602S3 would match very well too. Dali and Focal is also worth checking out.

Fully agree with PP in this one

The M/A RX1's would be superb speakers with the Arcam A65 amp; on some Atacama HMS1's or Partington Super Dreadnought stands, you're laughing.

If you dont want to spend that much on stands then some Atacama Nexus 6 stands mass loaded with atabites (about 4.5kg in each will suffice) would be ideal.

If not the M/A RX1's then the B&W 685's should also be considered as should some 2nd hand B&W CM1's
