Rega Saturn v Naim CD5i-2

Has anyone compared the the two for pure SQ?

I've seen a few going s/hand recently at good prices so just wondered.

No, love the SQ between the Naim and Leema but still can't abide with the looks. Before anyone says anything, the Leema is staying.

I've had the Apollo (original)* home on dem last year and although very good in some aspects, it lacked a little midrange solidity compared to the Arcam CD73.

Would the Saturn bridge that gap, or just suffer the fugly looks of the Naim?

*Although the Regas aren't a great visual match I was drawn to their quirky looks.

Well PP, It's been a while, but I used to have the Satern and a Naim CD5XS and to be honest, considering the price difference, there wasn't a great deal in it.

However, what I will say about the Saturn, it does have a few annoying foibles; the remote was very fussy, you have to be very precise when pointing it and I did have trouble playing a couple of my CD's, also it's relatively slow at reading the disc.

There's always this (normally £1390):

http://www.kronosav.com/digital/cd-players/electrocompaniet-pc-1-cd-player-ex-demo-prices-reviews.html

It's even got, "The latest 24bit/192kHz DAC from Cirrus Logic, together with a precision fully balanced analogue output stage operating in class A, sets the basis for a detailed, delicate and dynamic sound."

I reckon that would be just the job!

Definitely better than both Rega and Naim.

Thanks chaps. The slight reticence I've got with Electro stuff is I'm not familiar with its presentation. By contrast, I've had the Rega Apollo and Dac on home dem (and of course, own the Naim CD5i)... so just a little bit reluctant to spend that sort of money on a product I've no savvi with.

(Looks nicer than the Naim BTW)

PP, there's only one way to find out... think I've previously suggested contacting Mike and Caroline at Audio Destination and they will be more than happy for you to have a home demo of anything Electrocompaniet.

Did contact Mike about an amp which was ex-dem, and he's very approachable. It seems the two Electro dealers (Devon and used to be one in Tunbridge Wells, Kent) have suggested other makes, such as Exposure 3010S...

Although he didn't say in so many words, think they're trying to flog the Classic range rather than the entry-level incarnation. He certainly hinted it anyway.

I know who you mean... Pete from IglooAudio, really nice guy too and yes he really rates the Exposure amp.

With regards the CDP though, if you really wanted to hear one Mike would send you one, no problem.

Sorry, I can't help you with the Naim, but I do have a Rega Saturn. At the demo, it offered much more detail than the original Apollo and the Arcam CD17. I can't be specific about the differences, but I remember clearly that everything came alive. I haven't had any problems with it at all and I'm very satisfied. The current second hand price seems to be around £500+ for a really good example.
