REGA RP3 strange after noise

My Linn LP12 died last week and I bought a Rega RP3 and Elys 2 cartridge, plays fine and decent enough for the money, BUT after having played an album, or just a single track, when the arm goes to rest there is continued popping for about 60-90 seconds and then quite a large pop and then perfectly silent. (makes no difference if platter is on or not)

I've tried all the connections, all tight, rca's perfect, seems to me the cartridge is still "loaded" and takes a while to "unload" is this normal ?

Never encountered this before and am reluctant to connect it to my Cyrus system for fear of damage.

Running at the moment through a Rotel RA1520 using its own phono input, but using a rega fono through a line input makes no difference, any ideas, I just think the cartridge maybe faulty myself.

Is the Elys 2 new?

You are the 2nd person in the last week to experience problems with the RP3/Elys 2!

Maybe Rega have a bad batch of Elys 2, speak to your dealer to get this resolced your RP3 shouldnt be doing this.

yes the Elys 2 is brand new supplied to me direct ater the original owner sold me the deck which already had a faulty cartridge and he asked them to send me the new cartridge. Rega replaced no questions asked.

I've spoken to the original owner, he had a hiss problem, my original post was not really specific. It doesn't matter if the platter is turning or not, same scenario, but the cracks and pops last about 80-100 seconds then there is a large pop/bang that sends the bass cone about 1cm out, on my Kef Q300's and I'm afraid to connect to my main Cyrus system for fear of damaging my big Kefs that are driven by 150 watt cyrus mono power amps.

Yesterday I swapped the Elys2 and put in a BNIB audiotechnica cartridge (cheap) with absolutely no noise whatsoever, hardly any hum either, so am now going to hound rega for yet another cartridge or refund (preferrable)

Having had this problem I googled the issue and there are an alarming number of threads (dozens) with noise/hiss/hum and pops/bangs from the rega Elys and rega Exact, and a very high failure rate.

So in light of this I'm going to try and get a refund from Rega and source another cartridge (probably Goldring 2500 like on my Ittok arm on the Linn)

Surprised there seems to be such a large problem with these cartridges as they've been out a while and Rega should sort this.

thanks for the replies.

Hi hi-fi outlaw,

have you had any issues with the1012 GX, and is the surface noise reasonably quiet?

My Linn/ valhalla/ Ittok/ goldring 2500 was very nice and was quiet regarding surface noise especially on old records, some of mine are 40 years old, (yes I'm old -- lol) and hope to have roughly the same with the RP3.

Having gone to a reference Rega dealer, they contacted Rega and yes there are a faulty batch of Elys 2, something wrong with the pivot assy.

I've had enough of rega and am sourcing another cartridge (owner gave me £80 refund) so will be trudging the forums for good recommendations.

My Goldring 2500 was very detailed, but just a tad clinical, and prefer something a little warmer, so maybe the 1000 series or something else ??

It is surprising to read all the forums as there are many issues with all the rega carts, so it seems they should get their quality control sorted !!!!

I've had an Apollo, Saturn, DAC, Fono and all 100% perfect, just bad luck and bad timing I suppose.

Settled on a Denon DL110, and am very pleased with its performance, with little surface noise and great musicality, warmer than the modern Goldring and Ortofon carts and I prefer this personally, good result and Rega can stick their carts where the sun don't shine!!
