I recently had a problem with my Planar 3 it would play slowly and then play backwards. I was told it was a faulty capacitor on the pcb. when i looked it was physically in poor condition. I replaced it with this:

This is a 400v .22uF cap.

I've soldered it in today and the deck is back up and running however I think it may be running a bit too fast?

was a 400v the right one to resolve the problem properly? or is it fine and its something else that is potentially making it run a bit fast, maybe spindle allignment, or something. It is only running very slightly fast I think.
Any thoughts?

Providing the new one has the same value as the old it should be fine.

How much faster is your Rega running? The older ones did run slightly fast. Can't remember by how much, but I'm sure Google will help there.

Alternatively, have it serviced professionally - about £35 - and that'll highlight any speed issues.

Try printing out this Strobe Disc - making sure you have the required speed and mains frequency (50Hz in the UK).

Run the disc under a normal incandescent (i.e. non florescent) light and make sure the lines stay still. Older TTs can tend to run a little fast by design, as it gave the illusion of making the sound "livelier". If so, there isn't a great deal you can do as the motors are synchronous, meaning that they are "locked" to the frequency of the mains.
