The reference systems are there purely as a reference, not as exemplars of the very best system one could assemble.

As such, they get upgraded rarely, consistency being more important than constant box-swapping, and usually only when a piece of equipment emerges better able to reveal what other components in the system are doing.

Could you tell me what is your reference system at the moment? I read somewhere on your site what it consisted of once, but now i cant find it. I know you had the naim cd3/xps555 as a front end, asthetix pre and monoblocks for amplification and Im sure i read that you had the ATC SCM50's for speakers. What was/is confusing me is that the SCM50's are active - so can you bypass the ATC active bit and use your own amplification, or am i totally off the mark and there are a version of the atc's that aren't active? also, what cables are you running? Regards. Im going to be putting together a new system soon.
