I don't think the 1080i from Sky HD is natural. The box is basically upscaling from 720. So I guess its a case of which does the scaling best - the box or the TV

Most (All?) of Sky's HD content is transmitted at 1080i.

With a full HD TV I would expect the 1080i output to look better as it is simply changed to 1080p by the TV.The 720p output from the Sky Box will usually be rescaled from 1080i by the Sky HD box then rescaled upwards to 1080p by the TV.

Are you sure about this? One of the reasons I opted for the 37 inch PX80 over a full HD model was that I was advised by several suppliers that Full HD was only really warrented if I was going to be using sources such as Blu Ray because Sky only broadcast at 720. I will be rather miffed if that was not actually the case.

I think people get way to hung up on numbers, and statistics, and instead should rely more on their own eyes. It is like a car. You can talk about 0-60 times, and size of engine until you are blue in the face, but do you actually like driving the car? Do you like the picture you get? If yes who cares if it is 720, 1080 or 10 trillion?

I believe all the sports channels are 720p, which is a better format for fast moving action than 1080i.

Unfortunately progress hasn't managed to squeeze full HD into a 37 inch plasma screen yet , nor has it managed to squeeze a 42 inch plasma screen into my living room. - but the predominant advice seemed to be that Sky HD wouldn't benefit from full HD.

I am all for progress, but what is the point of full HD when there is not the content to watch? Any set less than 40" you won't notice the advantage unless you sit a few feet away. By the time Full HD is being broadcast as the norm, Full HD sets will be half the price or more progress will have invented something even better.

And just to say! its all down to time and circumstances change....life and technology

[/quote]If you set the Sky HD box output to "automatic" it will output the signal in the format it is transmitted in, either 576p, 720p or 1080i.At the time of writing all the HD channels are outputing at 1080i though this may change at times depending on the content being shown.

I'm watching the football now, and I'm about to switch to 720p to see if there is any difference.

Did it make any difference?

No.... we still lost.

But seriously, the ball seemed to have less traces of smearing at 720dpi but overall the picture may have been marginally less sharp than at 1080i. It id difficult to tell as the ambient light in the stadium was also changing as dusk gave way to night. I might try recording some of the football sequences on the BBC HD preview channel and trying the two different resolutions to see if there is a difference.

I'm still not convinced that Sky HD transmits at 1080i. I think it is transmitted at 720 and the box scales according to content. If I set the box to 1080i output the TV will tell me that it is receiveing 1080i even on standard def channels.

As I understand it, 720p is better for fast action tv, whilst 1080i may be better for news, docs etc. While the 1080i may produce more lines, they have to be deinterlaced, which obviously is going to affect the perceived quality and time taken to display a picture. With slow moving pictures, this is not a problem, however sports and other fast action may result in interlace artifacts. 720p displays all lines at the same time therefore no artifacts will appear.
