Record player help

Hi! I'm interested in getting into records after being given my parents old collection. Before today I hadn't got a clue. Been researching all day and think I am starting to get it. I just wanted to run the products I was interested in by some people that know their stuff, to see if this will even work.

I'm not sure if I need anything else? Do I need any cables? Do I need a pre amp?

The rega website recommends a pre amp in the complentary components section. Do I need one? What does it achieve? http://www.rega.co.uk/fono-mini-a2d.html

I'm already spending £652 without the pre - amp/any extras I'm missing? So was hoping for some help. Is this everything I need or have I missed something. Thanks

You will need speaker cable. If you were to purchase all items from one seller I would expect that you might get this at worst at a discount and at best for free.
In addition you will need to make sure you have a suitable solid level surface for the turntable to sit on. Also, where are you planning to put the speakers? Although often called 'bookshelf' they will sound much better on proper stands.
You won't need a pre-amp since the onkyo has one built in (the Phono input).
And of course you will need plenty of patience and good advice if your purchase is to prove an investment. Ideally find a shop where you can hear your chosen equipment together. If you have any doubts as to whether you can set it all up, check with the shop what support they offer.

amp -> speaker?

Is that how it would work? Someone said the speakers needed banana plug connections. Do they all need that? Or is that just the speaker end.

I have a solid table I was going to put the vinyl player and amp on. Was going to put the speakers on the floor next to them. Or try them in different positions around the room. Hadn't decided yet

Cable for Turntable to amp will be supplied with the turntable. You will need speaker cable from amp to speakers. You don't need banana plugs if you don't want them; bare cable connection is fine.

Speakers are best placed in an eqilateral triangle with your listening postion at the apex and tweeters at ear height, so get the speakers off the floor as they will be useless in that position.

As DouK and Petherick (hi there!) have observed there is little point in spending out good money and then dumping you speakers on the floor. Some suitable speaker stands should not cost the earth and should be utilised to get the best sound from your system which should all work together quite nicely.

I'd also suggest a carbon-fibre brush for cleaning the LP's of dust if they are that old ... ;-)

Ok, thanks for the tip! Looks like I will be doing a bit of overtime at work this month haha. Will look into some stands as well. Some of the LP's will be 40-50 years old! So will get a brush too
