Recommendations for speakers happy against the rear wall / on a bookshelf

Hi All,


My friend is looking to put together a system, but has a small living room and kids, so is not able to bring the speakers out into the room. We therefore need to look for a bookshelf speaker that is ok when there is not a lot of space behind it, or even sat on shelf.

He has his heart set on a 2nd hand Naim Uniti Atom (what I have), so the speakers would need to be 89+ in sensitivity........this was a mistake I made when I paired it with non meta KEF LS50s........addition of a power amp sorted me out.

Budget wise, it would be 3-400 2nd hand. maybe push that a little ;-)

Any recoomendations??

I was recently in the same predicament and purchased Dali Oberon 1s for a compromised listening position. Would recommend and am happy.

That said, Neat partners well with Naim, and could be in that price range second hand. If you could get some Neat Iotas, that would be my recommendation.

Neat Motive 3 would be a good option if you can find some within budget. They desperately need boundary reinforcement, but sound excellent when they get it.

Oberon 1s are a great suggestion.

Although both speakers suggested are good they are not 89dB+ and you will struggle to find a small bookshelf speaker that is....
The Atom will, however, drive both quite nicely.

Focal Aria 906, great speakers, front ported so OK against a back wall and supposedly a great match for Naim. Only thing., they aren't exactly small.

Dali menuet se are great up close to the wall, could do with a small subwoofer though to get that extra bit of low end....I'm sure the Atom would be able to drive them especially if it doubles it's power into 4ohms.....although that budget would have to be stretched a bit to bag a good pre loved pair, but well worth the outlay.

All the mention of DALI, and today I’ve seen two mailshots about their new Kupid speaker. (With that name it could be from Linn!)

Designed for close to wall, they say. As above though, few small speakers are more than about 86dB sensitivity, but unless trying to fill a big room that should not matter.

Keep your eyes peeled for Kupid, and bear in mind Spektor should be well discounted.

I am having to keep the Kupid advertising out of sight as will be asked "why didn't we get them, they look nicer [than the Oberon 1s]"!

They look cool, and it's good to see Dali finally switching to magnetic grilles! I might be tempted by a pair for a second system in the future.

What ever you decide you can buy speaker brackets that you put up on the wall which would keep little fingers out of the speakers .
as i did this myself with Dali Zensor 3s years ago when my daughter was young

Dali Oberon on wall are close enough, you will only notice the 2 db difference when playing max spl and at max spl with 50 watt it's still loud, besides how often do you need to use all the power your amp has ?

If you do you might wanna get a more power full amp or much more sensitive speakers like tekton
