Rear, centre & Sub

I have Monitor Audio RX1's for fronts, a Yamaha RVX-767 reciever, PS3, Marantz CD53SE, Panasonic G50 plasma. My dilemma is do I get the radius 90 hd rears, with the R360 or R370 sub. Then would the apex centre be alot better than the R250 hd? My room is almost 5m by about 3,5 so will the more expensive sub be worth bothering with? I'm also planning to upgrade my old CD player to a Marantz 6003. Any good suggestion appreciated, less jargon the better! Cheers.

If you're keeping the RX1s at front I'd strongly recommend the RX Center to keep the front sound as it moves across from left to centre to right, consistent. I think this is really important.
The R90HDs are cracking, I have a pair as rears and can recommend them.
Regards subs I have a Rsw12 in a smaller room than yours so I'd say go for it. You could get a good ex demo one for less than 500, or even less used. Although ex demos may now be hard to find as the RX models have been out for a good while.

I agree, stick with the same range of speakers up front if possible, I know how difficult that is as I used to have the RX1/C combination and it sounded awesome, but my wife did not like the L shape bracket / aethestics of the installation so I changed all front 3 to R250HD for a while. But I felt they dipped in performance to the RX1/C combo, that's why I now have the Apex. It terms of sub, I have an RXW12 in a similar size room and it sounds great, I also had a ASW610 previuolsy and would suggest you go for one of those over the 360/370 if you can't get hold of an RSW/RXW12 in budget.

I'd go further and say that it's better not to have a centre than to have a mismatching one. If you run the set-up on your AV amp without one connected then your amp should recognise the lack of centre and mix the centre channel information in with the front L&R. If you go this way then you'll probably have to be pretty careful with positioning your fronts and you may not get away with it if anyone sits too far of axis. The RX centre is the best option.

I haven't got enough room to fit an RX centre (shelf not high enough) & was thinking either of my two options would be okay. Wish I'd made the chimney breast aperture bigger now.

What would be the big difference in using either of the other models? I assume I am not as discerning as you so would it sound really bad with the apex or radius?

🙂 My RS Center fits in my rack with literally 2mm to spare so can sympathise.

Dans suggestion of doing without a center could be worth trying. As long as the tv watchers are sitting head on to the screen and fronts the receiver might make a pretty good job of it.

Then perhaps a friendly local dealer could let you try a centre and you can judge if it adds or diminishes the SQ.

If you can stretch the Apex A40 that would be the route I would take, if not the R250HD would still sound good and IMO better than making do with the three front channels being mixed into two.

I ended up getting the R370 sub, R90HD rears & Apex centre a couple of weeks ago. I'm thrilled to bits with them the combination sounds great. I'm no afficionado but it's as good as the cinema, first blu ray on was Dark Knight & my daughter jumped out of the chair when that window went through at the start.
