Hello All,

have not posted here for a while........ I hope that the regulars/staff are all in fine fettle and anybody I have not chatted to hello.

Right.... I have been lucky/unlucky enough to come into some compensation money (not the spurious holding my neck after a small shunt stuff mind....). It is my one and only chance to do something about my dire TV situation (my TV is a laptop with a TV card).

I am wading through TV reviews (this post is not about that).... and I have decided to go with a Freesat installation over Freeview HD (I live in London and would be interested in opinions - but again this is an aside...)

What this is about.... if I am going to have a dude climbing over the roof I may as well get a decent radio aerial installed. I have thought about this before about 3 years ago and I mothballed it due to lack of funds....

...... at that time I concluded that I if forced to choose I would have an old fashioned VHF (is that right?) FM aerial installed. FM is perfectly adequate and I concluded that it was better, for sound, than DAB. Plus the sets are cheaper.

...... then I heard about DAB+ and decided that perhaps I should get both, better to pay a man once than twice. As I said the money did not materialise.

Now...... am I right when I hear that government has sold all VHF frequencies for 4G phones? Will that mean that the commitment to turn off FM, by 2015 is it, will go ahead? What will happen to car stereos? Perhaps that is only relevant to the old TV signals....

DAB+ never materialised..... will it?

End of the day I like radio (silly me) and I like picking winners and not wasting money. I like good quality sound as well. FM does not seem broken but it has been fixed anyway....

What sound a POOR radio lover do?

Many thanks.

Get a vertically aligned FM half-wave open dipole (not folded and definitely not an 'omni'). Very good for FM and good for DAB too.

It is very unlikely we will ever see DAB+ broadcast in the UK.

Hiya Chebby,

hope you are well, sounds like you know what you are talking about and I shall ask the fitter for one.....

Any thoughts on Freeview HD vs. Freesat (Foxsat is out as I have refused to give Murdoch any money for a good few years and recent events do not convince me that morality is wrong).

The fitter should (hopefully) know what is best for your area, but an 'omni' is never good in any circumstances and can actually attenuate a signal.

If you don't mind the dish, I have been told [here] that Freesat is best.

I haven't tried it because I don't want a dish. (I have both Freeview and Freesat tuners in my TV in case I ever change my mind.)
