Quad CDP2 and 909 amplifier, is pre amp a good next step?

I have the Quad CDP2 with Quad 909 amplifier and Quad LS22 speakers. A great sounding system so far, but after a few months, I'm beginning to feel it's maybe a little limited in regard to listening music from other sources etc. Would anyone please like to suggest whether or not I now need a separate pre amp to get the best out of this system? I know of course that the CDP2 has pre amp ability, To date though, I've found digital connectivity from the unit to DVD player, MP3 etc etc a bit hit and miss. However, back to cd audio alone; sonically, I'm guessing from some reviews that a separate pre amp might be better in the long run! Any suggestions please?

I've read that the pre part of the CDP isn't the best option. The dedicated Quad 99 pre is better.
