QED Switching Box & HD-DVD player problem

Hi,

I recently bought a Sony Blu-ray player.

I already have a Toshiba HD-DVD player and Sky HD box conected to my Sony tv via HDMI, so needed a switching box to connect them all to one HDMI port on my tv.

I bought a QED 4-way switching box.

The 3 "Sources" above all work fine when conected seperately to the tv direct by an QED HDMI cord.

When connected via the switching box, the Sony blu-ray player and Sky HD box work ok.

However the Toshiba HD-DVD player doesn't, I get no picture or sound on my tv ??

When the player starts to play the HD-DVD disc I get "1080p" displayed briefly on top left of the screen, so presumably the tv is seeing something from the player (?) but thats all.

I swapped the cords (QED) and switching box ports about, but they all seem ok. It just seems the player and the switching box are incompatible for some reason ?

I tried emailing QED but am just ignored !!!

Anybody have this problem, or know how to fix it ??

Sounds like yet another of those HDCP handshaking problems: it's a system designed to prevent piracy, meaning that if the sending device - ie the player in this case - doesn't get the correct response from the downstream device - the TV here - then it just refuses to send content.

Something in the switching and extra cabling is stopping this signal being sent, but how to solve it I don't know.

Is there any HDMI control switched on on any of the units? For example Sony Bravia Sync on the TV or BD player, or Toshiba CE-Link? This can sometimes affect HDMI handshaking, and so all should be switched off in the devices' menus when using a switchbox.

Beyond that, the QED box is supposed to be HDCP compliant, so if you can't solve the problem drop me an email to the usual address and I'll take it up with QED directly on Monday.

Hi thanks for your reply,

Yes my tv is a Sony Bravia KDL-40W2000, the one recommended a few years ago. It's a great tv.

However I can't see anything in the instruction book about "Sony Bravia Sync", maybe that wasn't around then. I have also checked the manual for the Toshiba HD-DVD player and the only thing I can see is something called "HDMI Control (REGZA-Link)" . It then goes on to mention "...features offered with CEC (Consumer Electronics Control)..." ?

I notice that the player can be set to various resolutions, but the default setting appears to be 1080i. There is also a setting of 1080p which my tv is capable of displaying so I would have set it to that probably (I'll have to check). But the switching box states that is can work with both of these, so presumably that isn't the cause of the problem.

I get the gist of what you are saying but if it is an HDMI control setting on the tv or player that is causing the problem why does it work ok when connected direct, but not when connected via the switching box ?

Could it be that the switching box is blocking one of the HDMI pins output that the tv requires to sync up with the player ?

Perhaps, please, you can check with QED anyway, surely someone else has had this problem even though the HD-DVD format is defunct ??

Thanks again,

MXB

That's the Toshiba HDD player I have.

Andrew Everard (What HiFi) sent QED the link to this posting, but it seems they decline to respond to this problem with their switching box ?

I found on this website:

https://www.paceshop.com/shop/product/details/qed-hdmi-switching-box-4-way

...it states that...

"Please note that this product
does not support HD standard 1080p"

Anyone know what they mean by this ?
