What do folks think about the old Q Acoustics 1000 package compared to the new "improved" version, 1000i? Is it worth the extra outlay of is the original package a very good one for the money?

I have around £400 to buy a speaker package (5.1 at least). Any recommendations ?

I think you can get the Q Acoustics 1010i package for that nowadays which is a great system. I'd also have a look at the Wharfedale Diamond 9 HCP package as well.

Odd that you should mention the Wharfedales - I remember very well the comparative test we did between these two, way back when. The Q Acoustics package had the slightly better speakers, where the Wharfedales had the superior subwoofer - ie if you put the Diamond sub with the Q Acoustics speakers you got the best of both worlds. But we felt the Qs had the edge as the best all-round package.

Also, when Q Acoustics re-engineered its range for the 'i' designs, it significantly improved the subwoofer, as well as tweaked integration between the speakers and subwoofer in the 1010i 5.1 package - that made it a clear leader in its price class, being a step up from either its predecessor or its Wharfedale rival.

Cheers Clare, hadn't heard the Wharfeys but put them in as they were about the right price and I'd heard good things in the past.
So the 1010is are the way to go!

The Wharfedales remain a great package, and if there are bargain deals to be had, consumers can buy with confidence!

The reason, BTW, that the comparative test sprang to mind so easily is that it was during Awards judging, which is even more intense than standard testing.

We're deeply embroiled in final Awards judging right now, and it takes an age to go over and over certain categories and products. There are particular clips of film/piece of music we're not going to want to watch/hear for a while....

Thanks for quick responses guys.

It would be great if i could get the 1050i front's bundled instead of the small 1010i's, i'll have a shop around.

What would be a good AV receiver for around £300 - 400 to match this speaker set ? The source will be a PS3 for now.
