PV1. Mains cable upgrade worthy?

I don't really want to get into the whole "Cables do/don't work" thing. As I have Classik Powerkords on my Arcams, and Yello Powerkords on everything else, you can probably tell which camp I fall into.

But I was wondering, would my PV1 benefit from a mains upgrade? Also, as the PV1 uses a figure 8 connector tucked up underneath and it's a bit tight, is it even feasable?

Anyone else tried a mains upgrade on their PV1 or any other sub?

Hi Chris,

Just been talking about this on AlienRiks thread. On my subs i changed from the supplied cable as they sounded very "boomy" i changed to the QED qonduit mains cable and found it tightned the bass up no end and sounded very solid and accurate, so well worth the upgrade and there cheap to.

Out of curiosity ive tried a RAs classic powerkord on them and found that there wasnt much difference at all between the classic and qonduit. So id say a big yes, id definately change cables but i wouldnt spend loads on one for a sub, just my opinion anyway.

Oh, and i hope the wifes recovering ok mate, that sounded very nasty.

Well worth upgrading the mains cable and related Ac fuses with Hifi Tuning or Isoclean.

I did this on my Rel Strata 5 sub and it tightened the sub up beautifully, allowing it to intergrate perfectly and gave it lightning speed and much more tunefulness to the bass.

I found that changing the supplied lead with a Clearer audio copper-line Alpha power cable helped to tighten up the bass and it seemed to make it sound more focused (B&W ASW610).

It wasn't dramatic but still an improvement.

I tried a RA classic powerkord first which tightened the bass up and was impressed with the sound.
After a while I managed to buy 2 BT MTU's. Fitted one to drive the sub just by itself, couldn't believe the difference. Interestingly using a kettle lead or the Powerkord the sound was identical.

Bass is sharp, tight, tuneful and totally focused. The speed has always been spot on.
I didn't realise a sub could sound so good with music as it now does. (RSW12)

Hi Big Chris,

I changed my for Merlin cables Tarantula, this gave me similar results as the others have stated, it tightened the sub up beautifully, allowing it to intergrate with the rest of the system.

Bearing in mind that the mains frequency is 50 Hz and the 5th harmonic is still in the range of a subwoofer, I would say that even the most cynical person would find it hard to disagree that if a mains cable was going to have an effect it would be with a subwoofer!

Regards,Nick

May I offer another perspective.

I have noticed improvements when adding a Clearer Audio copper-line Alpha power cable to my amp and CD player, however I personally couldn't detect a difference when I swapped the one on my sub MJ Acoustics Ref 100 mk2.

I think I'll try again tonight though.

I'm with JohnNewman above on this one

I've changed the mains cables on my amp and CDP to the Clerer Audio cables and there has been a good change in soundstage.

I've also done the same with my brothers Arcam AV888 and P777 surround sound system and again there were very good sonic improvements. However we did change the mains cables on the PV1's and they made no difference what so ever

Well I've ordered a 1.5m R.A Powerkord-8 for the PV1.

I'll let you know my findings (if there are any).
