pure direct features worth it?

Hi all,

I still dont quite understand and i can't find much info in the manuals about it.But i have a 5.1 set at home and i'm looking to buy a decent receiver. However, I've read that if you play stereo music or movies that are broadcast in stereo, that only the 2 (left/right) front speakers are being used and my subwoofer is not.

From what I came to learn, the pioneer 'direct' feature IS able to use the subwoofer for bass and the yamaha 'pure direct' feature only uses the 2 front speakers (so no subwoofer). Since my 2 front speakers are not capable of supplying a big deal of bass (heck, why would i buy a subwoofer otherwise), I fear that performance may be slacking.

Any expert would care to shed some light on this please? Thanks.

Generally speaking ~ any amp worth its salt will sound better using DIRECT mode.

So if you want 'bass' your going to have to sacrifice 'quality' to achieve it

Hi,

I have my sub set up with the high level Neutrik? cable and the line out so I get bass no matter what. If I remember correctly, the REL manual recommended this set up.

Cheers,

Cofnchtr.

I have mine set up the same as Cofnchtr & yes i find using the "pure direct" modes for stereo to be superb, well it is on my Pioneer anyway.

As for 5.1 setup, is it ok to only connect 6 speakers at 8 Ohm, instead of 8 speakers? Won't this damage the receiver? (Yamaha Rx-V565 with HKTS 11 connected)

Thanks, I just dont feel like doing something wrong that may inflict damage 🙂.

Hi,

6 speakers at 8ohm is less of a load than 8 speakers at 8ohm.

Hopefully you won't connect more than one set of speakers to each set of binding posts. This will cause extra load.

Cheers,

Cofnchtr.

Thanks for the reply. This makes me wonder, since my speakers can handle a max of 120W and the subwoofer 200W.

If my Yamaha can output 90x7 Watt = 630watt

Does this mean it will output 126x5 Watt then for 5 speakers?

Sorry, I really know little about these things and this kind of stuff is hard to look on the net for. Probably because its a stupid question 😉

In my opinion Pure Direct is worth it, out of necessity I have to combine my AV and Hi-Fi needs in to 1 system, for me Hi-Fi takes priority, a surround sound amp that is good with music and a decent pure direct feature is as close to a Stereo Amp as I can get.

WRT your last question do not worry too much about Amp wattage, yor speakers may have a minimum wattage requirement but having more watts available than a speaker are rated for is not necessarily a bad thing.

Dont worry about your speakers.

also if you want to have the sub running is a stereo set up you can set the amp to do so. like wise if you have a stereo input you can have the sound mixed to come out of more than two speakers.

have fun.
