Just a thought. If the PS3 can play 3D Blu-rays with a firmware upgrade, surely then you'll not be able to make use of the hd audio because existing av amps won't allow signal pass through. Does that mean you can have one or the other. Also may this upgrade alter the firmaware so that playing a 2D Blu-ray may be affected in that the video and audio cannot go through an existing av amp?

Hopefully someone will understand what I'm hinting at.....

I see (I think), so the issue with needing a new amp is nothing to do with the 3D Blu-ray standard?

The dedicated 3D Blu-ray players are to HDMI 1.4 standard, so amps need to comply with that to pass 3D to a display. Until the PS3 is updated to 3D, and until we have some amps with which to test it, it's hard to tell what will or won't work...

I know it's been commented of here many times but the industry isn't doing itself any favours with the roll out of 3D. If someone like yourself is in the dark what chance do we have of making some costly mistakes with purchases?

Small so long as we act like smart consumers and research and have patience before we buy. If we just go mad and buy without much thinking however, then chances aren't on our side - just like they're not with any adopter of early technology.

What concerns me more is the format war thats going on again - shutter glasses vs lenticular lens technology.

I guess this might be slightly different from Blu Ray vs HD DVD in that so far as I'm aware the 3D Blu Ray technology is the same just the final delivery method is different. It does nevertheless raise the prospect once more of early adopters choosing a system that becomes obsolete in only a few years when everyone else plumps for the alternative technology.

When will manufacturers learn that co-operation is the way forward and that format wars just hurt the industry. After all, look how Blu Ray has struggled to get a foothold. Some say its just because the difference isn't great enough between it and dvd. In reality I still think the format war killed it from being an instant big hit.
