Hello all
How much better are the new generation of Blu-ray players than the PS3 (60GB version)?I'm particularly interested in reducing picture "grain". On the subject of picture grain I don't believe its an "effect" that a studio would choose to add to a HD format movie. The movie I have been particularly disappointed by is Underworld, having read many rave reviews regarding image quality. This is my first post to the forum and look forward to your contents

Setup: PS3 60GB, Chord 1.3 HDMI cable, Sony Bravia 40" TV (can't remember the model number but it is a true 1080p version)

Different films have different effects, and some of them definitely do have a grainy effect to them. Sometimes the director intended it to have this effect, sometimes it's to do with the film stock the movie was originally shot on, and sometimes it's a result of the transfer or any compression that may have been applied.

I also have a PS3 60gig, and have seen this effect with various movies. Equally, I have a pretty grain-free picture with movies that are intended to be "clean" such as CGI. Watch "Cars" on your PS3, pretty grain free viewing and a fine example of what the PS3 is capable of!

The reviews of Underworld commonly mention that there is a grainy effect on that movie. Changing your Blu-Ray player won't get rid of it, it's on the disc!

You'll find more grain and noise in dark movies, generally to do with using faster film stock and/or underexposure to achieve an 'ambience' - so it's not added, it's just there in the first place.
