PS3 to Onkyo 875 - Do I need a seperate DAC?

I'm hoping someone out there can help resolve an on-going debate I am having with a friend of mine.

I have a PS3 connected to my Onk 875 via HDMI..........................

............however, my 'mate' is adamant that I need to add a seperate DAC (like the Beresford TC-7510).

I was under the impression that the Onkyo could adequately handle this conversion without the need for yet another piece of kit.

Apologies if this is a stupid question, but I've had no experience of using DACs and I'm struggling to see the need.

Your views would be appreciated.

No, you don't. The 875 can handle anything the PS3 throws at it, audio-wise
