My wife and I have been looking to go down the home cinema route for a while now, doing the research, reading the mags etc. After reading the whathifi awards edition I liked the idea of the PS3/onkyo 605/tannoy mercury system recommended on page 30 of the magazine. Wife was feeling so so. So last weekend I realise that the 60gb PS3 is becoming as rare as hens teeth and I rushed out and bought one. Wife is not impressed.

So how do I convince her it was the right choice? Why do I want to convince her it was the right choice?

Her arguement is that surely in the near future all DVD players will also have a hard drive and USB input to load and view pictures, avi files and rip cd's. They will also link to the internet to enable them to update their firmware. Not to mention the blu-ray HD arguement.

So should I sell the PS3 on ebay? They are fetching good money and I'd make a small profit, or will I live to regret it? Is the PS3 so future proof and fantastic that nothing else wil be able to touch it for the same money.

Looking forward to your thoughts.

ps. If any of you have a crystal ball and can see into the future please tell me who wins the blu-ray HD war, who wins the FA cup and this weekends lottery numbers.

it says Blu-Ray, Gillingham FC, and in the Lotto advert, (they appear on the garden fence). That would be good wouldn't it. After having our PS3 for a few months, she turns round and says, shall we sell it? I want a Wii. Of course, I had to explain this would render our Blu-Ray discs useless, and the Wii isn't in HD. And just NO! And your comeback should be, with all the new sound formats and High Definition, why would you want DVD player anyway? And also, how could Blu-Ray disappear with the playstation 3 relying on it for its games.

Hmmm, you have set me rethinking now. I have just bought a Sony 40W3000U HD TV which I am picking up this weekend and was going to buy a Denon 1940 DVD player to play my DVD collection.

Should I possibly bin the Denon and go for a PS3 so i can use it as a media receiver into the TV for my PCs and to get the Blu ray player that gets thrown in with it? I already have 2 x PCs and a Wii? Is the firmware patch for the PS3 to give it a 1080p upscaling ability any good or at least comparable to the Denon 1940?

To PS3 or to Denon 1940....that is the question !!

As I am looking to buy this weekend any advice would be appreciated as soon as possible !

You are probably a bit too late to catch the Chistmas deadline, but as an 'impulse sale' the idea was good, especially if you replaced it with the 40gb version. There are a lot of PS2 gamers out there who panicked when they found that the 60gb was no longer produced, hence the price hike.

Buy the wife Ratchet and Clank for Christmas and, in the New Year, GT5 for yourself. Try playing those on a Toshiba HD player!

Dont rely on PS3 for gaming, it has no games!! As a cheap Blu ray player id say possibly keep it. But is it as good as other blu ray players? Will Blu ray honestly win the hd war??? If it doesnt then you have a rather attractive paper weight! In my opinion consoles should be brought for gaming not for movie watching or internet surfing. You have stand alone dvd/blu ray/hd dvd players for that kinda thing, and those were built to do just that job. A jack of all trades can be good, shame the PS3 didnt live up to the hype! Wheres the nex-gen console sony promised us?? Oh yeh Microsoft made it. lol

I cant see how people think the xbox 360, or even the elite can compare with the PS3. And before anyone says anything, I HAVE had a 360.

I was in a quandry over either the PS3 or the DENON DVD 1940-saw and heard both-I can tell you that the DENON trounces the PS3 for sheer picture quality, beautiful blacks, detail and Colour. It's also much better than SONY's new hyped up Blu Ray player going for free on this site to any lucky person who wins it. See something like Casino Royale on the DENON and compare it with the SONY's attempt-No contest! and that's just with a mere DVD Upscaler. Beautiful. As someone else has said on this forum.....Blu Ray...the new Betamax...Yes....but bet your bottom dollar we will all be continued to be brainwashed into getting Blu Ray/HDD sooner or later or even forced into it especially too when you can't buy any more DVD's if it ever came to that.

Unless you're a gamer-Forget the PS3-If you like beautifully rich detailed pictures go for the DENON

You gotta look at the fact that it has taken this long to get DVD to the almost bullet proof situation it is at the moment. Blu-Ray and HDDVD are relatively new formats with oodles of teething problems. Basicly, Denon have got very f ing good at making DVD players, they have been great for some time. It will be some time before we have a HD spinner of comparible quality to the High End DVD players currently available.

Glad to read your thread re the Denon. I have just bought same for Crimble (to me from me) and it is sitting in its box awaiting the big day. Told the wife it was only 50 quid so she was quite happy. Oops! That was the price of the HDMI lead. I had thought about the PS3 so it looks as if I made the right choice. Can't wait.

thanks all for the advice. As I already have 2 x hi spec gaming PCs and a Wii it sounds like the way ahead is the Denon 1940 :)

Just need to convince the wife I need a Onkyo 605 amp and a set of Q Acoustic 1010 speakers next !

and Jimjams !!! lmao ..... told my wife and she thought your polanning was hilarious.

I cant see how you think the PS3 is better as a gaming console, the library of games is laughable. What has the PS3 got that in gaming terms that the Elite hasnt?? When games come out on both formats the 360 version is always better looking and better frame rates. Prime example being Pro Evo 2008, game play is a joke on the PS3. The future of gaming lies in the online multiplayer side of things, PS3 doesnt even come with a mic??? Like i said the PS3 is just a cheap blu ray player and thats all it will ever be, Sony have forgotten about its roots and what the Playstation brand means. They are to blame from turning the best gaming brand into a cheap blu ray player and are hoping it somehow pulls through. It shouldnt have the logo "this is living" it should maybe say "this is viewing"? Forget gaming, it should be labelled a multimedia blu ray player.

Wrong. The PS3 is what it was always intended to be - a very powerful games console. It is designed to extract the masses of information that can be stored on Blu-ray discs and in so doing will also upscale dvd's and play HiDef material. This it does well at a relatively affordable price and why it is mentioned in this 'home cinema' forum and not a games forum which would be a little outside the WHFS&V remit. The fact that it plays games is a bonus feature here, not a reason to purchase.

However, if you were to argue in favour of your Xbox's HD-dvd disc playing abilities against those of the PS3, then that would be different.

No, as an HD player the PS3 plays Blu-Ray discs better than a 360 with the add-on HD-DVD drive plays HD-DVDs. The PS3 is well rated by What Hifi as a BluRay player. The 360 with add-on HD DVD drive is not so well rated. I have one and whilst I'm quite happy with it I'll be purchasing a dedicated player in the near future - possibly multi-format to escape this ridiculous HD format war ! <oh - and the PS3 outputs HD audio, 360 doesn't>

I have one too mate ... But can't agree with your post. Im no fanboy, I have spent time on both systems. PS3 is a better media centre and HD player, but there's no denying the 360 has better titles available. - In terms of gaming (and graphics) they'll continue to be evenly matched. Which means Microsoft should either get an HD DVD drive in the 360 quickly or reduce the price of the Elite by over £100. At the moment its expensive compared to the PS3. Please, no posts saying "once developers get used to programming the PS3" ... !!

.
but there's no denying the 360 has better titles available
but you cant hold that against the machine. Having Microsoft as the manufacturers of the 360, its no doubt there will be more games available, as they are converted from PC titles. Or more the other way round now.
Please, no posts saying "once developers get used to programming the PS3" ... !!
Its actually developers wanting to keep themselves in the black. Why should they boldly go..., when they can continue cracking out games for the 360 and PCs, making easy money. If the PS3 plays games as well as the 360 as you have said, and can do all the media centre and HD player stuff better, does that not make it a better machine? And as I have said, its not the machines fault that games are not being written for it.

It's highly likely that now that it appears that Blu-ray is going to win (only Paramount/Dreamworks and Universal supporting HD DVD now). The electronics manufacturers will now be confident to produce a range of Blu-ray / DVD type players to suit different budgets and facility requirements.

It's still possible to buy a DVD player without RGB Scart, Component or HDMI. Quite clearly there is a market in DVD for a range of products, so why shouldn't there be for BD too?

I'm sorry for HD DVD adopters, but it's better in the long run to have only one format to get the masses on board. As a LaserDisc fan, my biggest bugbear was that it never became mass market. I enjoy good things, but I don't wish to be elitist!

I agree that if one format is going to eventually 'win', then it is more likely to be Blu-ray but I do not believe that having one format is necessarily a bad thing. Two camps fighting it out may force them to keep improving the product to try and lure buyers. Unlike Beta-Max, VHS, LaserDisc et al. dual format machines should play anything that's thrown at them. Afterall, we have had multiformat dvd recorders for years and that hasn't stopped people buying them.

To be honest, I don't think that buying a high def player is that high up on most peoples shopping list of 'must haves'. OK, so those with hdmi 1.3 AV amps will probably want to exploit the surround sound capabilities of the new format, but there are plenty of good upscaling SD dvd players out there that will satisfy the visual needs of all but the 50"+screen/ projector owners.

Given their film sucesses in 2007, Paramount/Dreamworks and Universal may object to the 'only' tag you gave them!!

Given what's happenning with Warner Brothers (switching to support only
Blu Ray), it's looking more and more likely that Blu Ray might become
the future standard. And you just went out and bought yourself one of the few Blu Ray 1.1 compatible players currently available to the UK market. You can tell your wife about how you predicted all this and went and bought yourself one of the most advanced Blu Ray players on the UK market.

I was sure I was going to get a Denon 1940, but they are both similarly priced and what advantage does the Denon 1940 have over Blu Ray players like the PS3? The PS3 is one of the few Blu Ray players with a built in hard drive to store films, internet capability and profile 1.1 compatability. As for upscaling, some people claim that the PS3 is better than the Denon. I was surprised and still unsure if that's true, but why use the DVD for upscaling anyway? (My Pioneer TV seems to do a great job upscaling standard TV, and the Onkyo receivers can also upscale well)

So far, the only Blu Ray competition to the PS3 with Profile 1.1 is the Panasonic DMP-BD30 and I can't find it anyway yet.

Sure. I just wouldn't want somebody to go out and buy a PS3 from a gaming perspective.

But agree, until Microsoft get an HD-DVD drive in there for the same price as the PS3 it's the better all-rounder.

Also agree that developers may not be willing to fork out for the development costs. But I don't think you're going to see much better than you have already. The PC sets the standard these days - so with the likes of Crysis you've already seen well beyond what both consoles are capable of doing. Cell or no cell, the PS3 cannot compete with two Geforce 8800's running in SLI.

HD debate. Hmmm - only way around this is to buy a multi format player. Okay Warner have gone BluRay but what about Paramount/Dreamworks and Universal ..? The only two multi-format players available so far have some drawbacks but I'm sure that will change during 2008. And if the price is right it will help get more people on board. Everyday Joe doesn't know what he is missing !

I would point out to your wife that the Sony Playstation 3 was voted "Best DVD & HD Player £300 - £500 in Awards 2007" by What Hifi. If you don't want to use it for games, you don't have to, I'd say the award as player speaks volumes for itself. You could always hold on and wait for something better to come out, trouble is, if you take this attitude, you'll never buy anything.

I have a PS3, I used to have the Denon DVD-A1 (a £2500 DVD Player when I bought it) and I've now sold it as the PS3 produces pictures that are far superior (and I'm comparing DVD performance here, Blu-Ray is in a league of its own). This is down to the HDMI connection and upscaling compared to the (admittedly much older) Denon's 576p component picture.
