PS3/AV Amp upscaling?

Hi,

Just wondering, if you have an AV amp which upscales - so would upscale a DVD, and a PS3 playing that DVD - which does the upscaling? Can you turn each on and off? And what would produce the best result is it usually the AV amp that does a better job of upscaling or the dvd player (ps3 in this case)

cheers

Depends on a few things. Assuming your TV accepts a 1080p signal, if you have the PS3 set to output at 1080p then it will be doing all the upscaling (no matter what the amp is set to as it will just pass the signal through). If you switch this to 576p and then set the amp's upscaling on to 1080p, the amp will do the upscaling. If you set the PS3 to 576p and switch off the upscaling on the amp, the TV will do the upscaling.
As to which is better, the only way to find out is to try the above and see which you prefer. If you do prefer the TV or the amp's upscaling to the PS3's, that's fine, but remember you need to set the PS3 back to output at 1080p (or 720p if you have an HD Ready TV) when you watch Blu-Rays or play games, otherwise you'll be losing detail from these sources.

interesting - is there a quick way to switch the ps3 from 1080p to 576p? if not it would be a lot of hassle to go between the two from dvd's and blu rays / games

All this is speculative but i now have completeled my 5.1 speaker purchasing and will be getting in the av amp / 1080p capable tv in the next month or so

Thanks

Indeed it is, which is why, although my Onkyo amp is better at upscaling than my PS3, I leave it on 720p the whole time as the difference isn't massive and it's too much faff switching between them all the time.
Unless I'm watching a favourite DVD, then I might do it
