Currently I am connecting my PS3 with Onkyo 605 receiver via hdmi and optical, I need to free one optical-in on my Onkyo for some other component, however when I trying to setup audio out on my PS3 via hdmi it say device doesn't support this. Do I have to have both optical and hdmi connection on PS3 for sound in 5.1, Another issue I have is PS3 refuses to play AAC 5.1 sound via optical for Mp4 or H.264 ripped with AAC 5.1 soundtrack. Please help

Hi Nigel, you don't need the optical connected to get 5.1 audio. The PS3 supports 2.0, 5.1 & 7.1 via HDMI, I have one and an Onkyo 606 and I can get 5.1 via HDMI.

What are your Audio Output settings set to? Is it still trying to send the audio via Optical when there's only a HDMI cable connected? You've probably already seen it but here's a link to the Audio Output settings;

Under certain circumstances Audio Output can be reduced to 2 channels, so perhaps that's what's causing it;

Afraid I'm not too sure about the second issue, perhaps the above is causing it.

Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) 5.1 is not supported by any AV amp that I know of, but i believe that the PS3 can convert it to PCM 5.1 and sending via HDMI to your 605 is supported.
