Hello.

Anyone know if the PS3 can yet output Dolby True HD or DTS Master Audio via its HDMI output yet, and if it can't, when will it be able to Will this ability be as a result of a firmware upgrade?

There has been a recent firmware upgrade which enables the PS3 to output Dolby TrueHD via HDMI 1.3a, as we reported in our recent Blu-ray/HD DVD test (What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision, October 2007, p64). The upgrade also enables it to handle 1080p/24fps video.

I have a PS3 connected via HDMI to a new Onkyo receiver (875) capable of decoding the new Dolby sound format. In your comment you state that it will play play Dolby True HD via HDMI 1.3a. I have tried numerous times to get the receiver to output in Dolby TrueHD, but to no avail, i believed that at this time none of the discs allowed access of Dolby TrueHd, or DTS HD. I also was in the understanding that because of the bitstream/pcm issue that it was impossible, at this present time, to get either of the new sound samples from the Blu-ray discs.

Could you (if possible) explain how you get Dolby TrueHD to be outputted? Is their only a few discs that allow the sound format to be accessed?, or am i complete numpty, which is also possible!!, or finally what equipment did you use to get the Dollby sound format from the PS3.

Thanks in advance for any input you, or anyone else may have.

Before I invest in a PS3 is anyone able to tell me if one day it will definitely be able to output Dolby True HD AND DTS HD Master Audio via HDMI? Other wise I'll go a different route.

THANKS

I think that true hd gets converted to pcm and dts master is down sampled to normal dts by the ps3 in fact im 99% on this

That's right - at present.

There have been so many questions re PS3 - especially concerning sound - that we're working on a 'How to' piece to put up here ASAP.

The big problem is separating the PS3's innate abilities with its current capabilities - ie what's available now and what's waiting for a future firmware upgrade. Watch this space!

God you're a cheaky bunch aren't you!

The PS3 is clearly more than capable and is likely to be Sony's Blue Ray guiding light in a way that the stand alone home cinema BD players can't be because the PS3 appeals to gamers and will get into the playroom that way.

What everyone seems to want to know is that What Hi-Fi will make a massive announcement when new PS3 firmware becomes available and make it really really really clear how to obtain it.

Personally, I'd like to know how perfectly it performs visually and sonically against the much more expensive home cinema only versions of BD players. Because it's looking increasingly pointless buying anything other than a PS3 for BluRay Discs

For me sure buy a PS3 if you want to primarily use it as a games machine with the bonus of the fact it is also a decent BD spinner, but if your intension is to buy it as a BD player and you have little or no interest in it's gaming ability then I personally would not invest in one.

Now the reason the I would not invest in one as a solely BD player has nothing top do with the machines abilitys as yes it does a good job with BD movies, but more due to the fact that IMHO there are not anywhere near enough BD movies out yet worth investing in. The same goes for HD-DVD before anyone says I am slagging BD as a format. Sure it is nice to see a movie in all its HD glory but how many times can you watch Casino Royal? Where as if you stick with DVD the disc is cheaper and much more choice of movies, also the fact if you hang fire on a BD/HD-DVD machine until there are more titles actually worth owning the Standalone hardware will have come down in price and also there is the fact that we have a "nd generation Hybrid HD player comming from LG and one from Samsung, would you rather not have a player capible of playing both HD formats incase one dies? and in investing in a Hybrid player you also gain more choice of movies to buy and is that not what we all want as a consumer choice?
