Hi gang!

Trying to post a small pic in the "my system" topic and I keep gettin the message "You do not have permission to upload or link to files. Please contact your system administrator".

Now I am my own system admin and i have contacted myself and I have no idea.
Anyone on the WHF site seen this before?
I'm running Windows Seven RTM and haven't seen this problem before . . . . could it be your servers?

Hi Andrew, thanks for your speedy reply.
No I haven't tried posting pics here before.
The dialog box that comes up is coming from your server and not the standard windows message.
I could post you a screenshot but . . . .

You do no you cant upload pics directly to the site dont you? You need to use a hosting site such as flikr or photobucket, then use the insert/edit images button on the toolbar(looks like a tree) and cut and paste your image url's into the pop up box that appears.

ahhhh!

Thanks you two!
But when I select the edit function, say on this message, then compose, then options, then file attatchment add/update it's then the error dialogue pops up . . . . that's where the confusion popped up as well.
I see the tree thing now, thanks . . . .

Does anybody know where pjpro's thread is that tells you how to post pictures.

I've seen it before but must remember to send it to my inbox or print it off for future reference.

To upload photos - First of all you need to ensure the photos are hosted somewhere such as Flickr. www.flickr.com (Free site) Once this is done you can start to post pictures. Personally I use Firefox but I assume it will be similar for Explorer.

You will need to get the address location of your picture so (using Flickr) click on the photo you want to upload. Once this is done you will need to right click and select 'properties'. You will then be presented with a small box of data and the top line will say Location. Copy the URL listed opposite this.

When you post there should be a tool bar available under the message header. Located on this is an icon of a picture of a tree. Click on this and it will bring up a little box. The top line will say Image URL. Paste the URL you previously copied here. Then set the Image Alignment. Once this is done the dimensions of your image should be shown. You may need to resize the image if it is too large (more than 400 pixels) as this really peeves of the Mods! Then just click on 'Insert' and job done!!

Hoping this works

Nope it didn't. I am using firefox on an Imac.

I posted the URL (http://s684.photobucket.com/albums/vv210/barnsleydave_2009/?action=view&current=P1010638.jpg) into the image/url box

Typed "test" in the image description

Set alignment to top. Although i really don't know what that does.

and set dimensions to 400 x 400. left everything else as blank

I'll try again. This time just putting url and leaving everything else as blank

The 'File attachment Add/Update' feature under the Options tab doesn't work and never has done in my short experience on this site. I always get that message you quoted when I try to upload a pic from my computer. The direct upload works ok on other forums so maybe on here it's a precautionary security measure, which seems sensible I guess.

Re uploading pics from photobucket and the like. Yes that method works fine but is quite long-winded when you only want to post up a one-off pic and are unlikely to use it again. Once that pic has been uploaded (using bandwidth and part of your free allocation) to the image storage site it just sits there, probably never to be used again. A far quicker way and to not waste bandwidth or clutter up your account, is to simply locate the image you want to post up, then copy the image address by Control clicking it on a Mac (or right-click on a PC?) then paste that url (which will usually end in .jpg) into your Compose window and insert [ img ] [ /img ] tags either side of it (omit the spaces).

Edit: I should also add that the 'copy image address' direct method should never be used for large, full-screen pics.

Right so I need to remove the "?action=view&current="

let me try again.

Whoo Hoo. Thanks Guys. It sunk in, in the end.

Lots of points raised here, some of which we're trying to address over the coming months - primarily Mac/Safari behaviour though. We certainly won't start hosting your images for you, we haven't got the servers for it

I'd like to post a picture, I've read through all the useful info in this post, but in the reply section there is no tree icon on the toolbar. Is there a problem tonight? or do I have a problem? I've tried Firefox and Internet Explorer and it's the same with both.

Try my primer (link in signature). It uses HTML, so doesn't require the tree icon (whatever that is)

Lots of really useful info in your post, no doubt I'll be using some of it.
