Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade a budget hifi system (Sony CDP-XE570, Yamaha AX-396 and Eltax Liberty 5+) to something a little more substantial and was really keen on getting the AE22 active speakers.

What kind of partnering equipment should I be looking for in the way of a Preamp and CD Player with a budget of around 2500GBP.

Found a review in a recent WhatHiFi - suggested the Cyrus Pre VS2 and the CD 6 SE as good partnering equipment. Along with the AE22s this gives a total spend of about 2300 GBP, if memory serves me well.

Definitely agree with the Cyrus combo BUT i have heard Cyrus recently with AE speakers and although it sounded good; it became tiresome after a while and fairly 'bitty'.

Another decent pre-amp to consider would be the Arcam FMJ C31 pre-amp

OR

If you want to save £££; there are a number of very VERY good Musical Fidelity pre-amps for sale on eBay including the NuVista pre-amp they did. Sounds and looks superb!!!

Both Arcam and MF suit AE speakers down to a tee soundstage wise, IMO!

Could you give us an idea of what music you listen to and what kind of room these will be going in to?

See what Acoustic Energy suggest?

What about a DAC with a pre built in?

Make sure the pre-amp you choose has XLR balanced outputs. I believe that's the only means of connection other than jack.

Also consider AVI ADM9.1s.
