Hi all...Can someone tell me if I could use a power amplifier on its own with a CD player? For instance could I just have a Arcam FMJ P1 and a Arcam CD player and thats it?

Hi

You can if your player has a digital volume control but they normally are detrimental to sound quality unless you have something like a quad or meridian component with proper pre-amplifier function.

I can't comment on your arcam query specifically though.

As DM said.. it's basically a no with a but... or a yes with an if.

There's been a few people trying to circumvent preamps lately. Fact is, if they weren't necessary they wouldn't exist. What you need is a power amp that has some kind of volume control. Fortunately such a product exists, most commonly known as an integrated amplifier.

You could always use a passive 'preamp'.

In it's simplest form, a passive 'preamp' is simply a volume control in between the source and the power amp.

With the right cables, the sound quality can't be beaten.

Cable quality here is the key - NVA (Nene Valley Audio) do some good passive preamps and have the perfect cables to suit.

Check them out on ebay.

Tony.
