Positioning of Q-AV rears?

I've got two positions where I can fit the rears of my Q-AV system. In the first, one of them is in an arched alcove a short way down from the ceiling, and in the other, they're about a foot in front of the seating position, but out in the open. Does anyone who has played with the rears have a recommendation as to which location I should use?

I'd go for the first option.
